hey guys, i just got a pair of velocity deep vs with machined sidewalls, they are used and have some scratches, nothing real deep though. I was wondering, i would like to powder coat these to a custom color but what should i do to have these appear to be non-machined when finished? i figure that i should smooth out the side walls so they are less "ribbed" or what? sand them alittle? any one have any ideas or ever done this before?

Should've just bought the non-machined versions. It's going to cost you more to turn them into those anyways.

Aren't the machined surfaces for the brake pads?
If so, that should be masked before PCing, using the proper tape.

Or you've got disc or hub brakes.
Then just sand 'em before PCing to smooth the ridges down, like you said.

Are you saying you want to paint the sidewalls? This is a bad idea with rim brakes. They don't grip well on the paint and they will leave wear marks very quickly.

you're advice is genious. what else you got? sorry but your response seems fairly rude, i got these for 30 for the pair, brand new each go for >60, and to powder coat would cost no more than 100, hell ive heard i could get it done for 50-60 bux, so all in all i would walk away with a customed colored deep v for around the same, if not less than retail.

i thought i made myself pretty clear in my first post but i guess i will try to explain it better. I want to powder coat the entire wheels to create non-machined wheels. i will not need the machined sidewalls as i will not be running a front brake.

deltron, ill try to post up some pics as soon as im done with them, might be alittle while as im trying to build another bike that these are for.

Here's a pair I did with Harlequinne color shifting pigments. Just for some inspiration.
Had to mask the sidewalls for brake pads though.
And this pigment can be added to clear paint and shot over a black powdercoat, as a 411.

you got me, i mistyped that comeback, ill own up to it. but he is not dead on with his advice, lets do the math 15+15 for both rims plus say 60-100 for powder coating in a color deep vs dont come in compared to 60-65+60-65 for non-machined deep vs. thats 90-130 against 120-130. seems like if anything i will save or spend just as much but in the end i will have a pair of rims that are a unique color. im really not trying to bust anyones balls, i posted this with the intent to get advice on my original question not advice of what i should have done. thats ridiculous, please dont do that.

sorry to burst your bubble man, but you should get a brain before you start being so judgemental. how can you really judge me over the internet? you dont know me. i dont know why everyone is so hostile around here. do you know what type of bike i ride? what if i rode a road bike with disc brakes huh? dont assume if you only have little details to gather from. im not, in my opinion, a hipster, and i really try not to judge, so i would appreciate it if others would try not to judge me, even if your only presumption is that i <b>might</b> ride fixed gear... man... reading these forums is alot easier than posting on them... maybe ill come back when things get civilized.

As an aside, I honestly didn't think you could powdercoat aluminium; I thought anodising was the only way. But your thread prompted me to do a bit of google research, and now I know better. Thanks! It might come in handy some time when I want something no-one else has, too.

And I know even less about BMX, except for the stainless frame with Tuff wheels and quality BB sitting outside that I rescued quite some time ago on a whim. Oh yes, I also know there is a LOT of retro BMX stuff going on, with lots of fancy and outlandish *anodised* colours.

At least I *can* say I have ridden a BMX!!

Anyway, to the other guys who thought they'd hustle a poster off the forums... you gotta pick ya targets better. It's the complete IDIOTS you gotta go after, otherwise you make yourself look like... IDIOTS!
