Which frames are made in America?
 

I've been reading a lot of posts in these forums regarding internet bikes vs LBS bikes. Some of the sentiment I see has prompted me to wonder:

Do any of the 'big' bike companies still manufacture their frames in America? I know there are lots of smaller companies that build their own frames here, but I'm wondering about the mass-producers.

Good question. It may be a simple matter of economics. Under $500 I really doubt it. Over $2,000 maybe not. The cost of quality control on a high end bike making the company more inclined to do all the work state-side. I know one Cannondale frame was made in the US. A custom build for a pro basketball player. Try e-mailing Trek, Canondale, and Schwinn. Let us know how responsive they are, if they answer at all.

a couple cannondales, i think. none of the carbon cannondale frames are though.

that's about it.

All of the aluminum Cannondales.
All of the OCLV carbon Treks.
All of Litespeeds.
All of Waterford.

Though I'm not a big Cannondale fan, they are the most affordable US made bike. Their frames are also some of the most beautifully constructed and painted factory frames made anywhere.

Some LeMonds are still made in Waterloo Wi at the Trek factory. The cf bikes and the spine bikes,
here are a couple photos taken during factory tour.

Lemond steel bikes are made in the USA of TrueTemper steel, they ride very nice. Creating good jobs to Americans is a good thing.

Worksman has been making bikes in the Queens, New York since 1898. But they are an industrial bike manufacturer.

If you are talking North America I think all Devinci Aluminum frames are made in Quebec Canada.

Now, spreading to all of North America, you have Rocky Mountain, Norco, Quintina Roo, and Cervelo.

I think you will find that with exception of some Rockies and some older Cervelos all of the above frames are made offshore.

It's obvious that many people have a quite liberal definition of "'big' bike companies."

I believe Trek's ZR9000 are made there as well.

Aegis are made right here in Maine. Indy Fab in Mass, Spectrum in Phil, Litespeed in Tenn.

I bought my Klein with that promise. Hope it will remain so. In spite of Trek ownership.

Sorry for digging this thread up, but which 'big' companies are still building bikes in the USA?

The Cannondale Super Six is made in America, along with the Caad 9's. The aluminum Synapses as well.

Everyone wants an American made bike... until they see the price tag. Yeah, it's generally going to cost you.

Not for much longer as they are closing down the factory and moving production to Asia.
