Buying on ebay
I'm always looking for a new bike and check out ebay regularly. The other day I saw a newsletter that said most of the new bikes sold there were stolen, that most companies did not allow internet sales, that a lot of the bikes ended up in the shop for major repairs, etc etc. Anybody had any experience buying a new bike on ebay?

big discussion about that 'article' in the road forum.
keyword in that figure was 'guesstimate'. not very responsible reporting, i'd say.

The thread G60 pointed out is rather interesting, and as he says, it's not much more than a 'guesstimate' as to how much stolen goods are on eBay.
I've only bought used bikes from eBay (I'm quite fond of my Classic & Vintage bikes), but I would imagine that the used bike market would be more likely to be the funnel for getting rid of stolen bikes, especially stolen parts, rather than new bikes.

I have bought 3 bikes off of ebay...YMMV
One was a no problem everything went fine transaction, one was a PITA, the shipping was outrageous, the professional packing job wasn't and the bike was damaged in transit. The 3rd transaction was canceled when the seller started playing games. As a general rule buying bikes thru Ebay is going to be a crap shoot. I do well on accessories and parts, but have not been happy with the whole bike routine. I do buy bikes from private parties. I have purchased 3 from BF members and have been very pleased with the results.

I've bought 2 used road bikes on e-bay with no problems. I do, however, ask a lot of questions prior to bidding, and have not even bid on some bikes that looked like a great deal - because the seller either did not respond to questions, or knew nothing about what was being sold. Bikes are like anything else - ask questions, know what shipping should cost, and if it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn't true... or it's stolen!

I may be lucky but I have bought 1 used, and 2 new bikes on ebay. I have been more than happy with all of the stuff I have bought. I suggest you know your prices, know what it will cost for shipping, and if you have any doubts ask questions.
I only use pay pal so this may be a way to ensure somewhat at least that the deal is legit...be cautious but you should be fine.
