That afternoon the hurricane service, for the first time put a hurricane warning in place when there was no hurricane. about 20 miles before it hit land on the east coast of florida it became a CAT1 hurricane. I was driving around in it for most of the night since the power here went out at about 7:00pm. Katrina didn't explode into the CAT5 storm until it got out over the Gulf of Mexico.

Yeah, you are right. At some point Katrina was just a cloudy day somewhere. But that isn't the point, now is it?

Ick. Every rack owner's nightmare.
Out of curiousity, did you have the vise locked, or just clamped down?
I've heard of issues with the Thule racks when they're clamped, but not locked with the key. Personally, I've always locked mine.

Locked. I do so out of habit. I get the bike back from the LBS tomorrow. Good thing too, looks like rain.

I learned to wrap the downtube with a bike lock and use extra straps on the wheels.
That bike was ridden on that same back wheel for many years after that. I recently swapped out most of the parts and set it up as a commuting and day touring bike. I just got some new panniers yesterday and they hook onto the blackburn mtn rack right next to the scar from I-55.

Wow, I had a very similar experience with a Yakima rack as well. The bike managed to work itself loose from one pole while I was driving long distance on a highway. It was barely hanging on to the other pole when I pulled over to fix it. After that I ditched the stupid Yakima and got a Saris. Love the Saris.

To Iamlucky 13- I always lock the bike when mounting it on the rack. Habit mostly.
How about rear mounts like the hitch system? Someone asked about this. Sounds like a great idea until you are rear ended.

Thanks. I don't know about hitch racks, but I had a trunk rack for a few years and it made me nervous. It's a little more out of the wind, but definitely less stable. I only ever used it for short trips. I've heard tons of stories about people losing their bikes off trunk racks, but on the other hand, I've got a pretty good suspicion that most of them didn't mount it securely.
