Call for Google Earth Maps
Where are all the bike routes on Google Earth? It's such a great way to share maps or favorite bike routes. Available MUP, greenway and bike route maps are uninformative and out of date. And there's no info out there that details personal, unofficial favorite routes. It's easy and free to create a route in Google Earth, and post it for everyone to share. Maybe I've just missed them, and someone can tell me what search parameters I'm missing. If not, get out there and post some maps. Image in the ease with which you could look up an area you will be visiting, and see all the favorite bicycle routes with descriptions in that area.

Hi,
I don't know of anything for your area, but Colorado has a couple great sites.
trailcentral has trail information with many trails viewable in google earth.
They now cover trails in states other than Colorado & Utah. Feel free to add to them.
My website(s) geobiking.org (migrating stuff to this site.) and GeoBiking cover mostly everyday biker routes. Trail descriptions and pictures are also provided.
There is a .kml file on my sites showing over 800 miles of bike trails/MUPS from Longmont to Waterton Canyon.
Happy biking,
Bob

Awesome, gps_dr. Just the kind of thing I was thinking of. I think it'd be great if we could keep a list of websites like yours under one thread here, and if anyone plans on traveling, they can find out if there are already user maps of the area.
I think I'll be working with Triangle Trails in the Raleigh/Durham area to get all of the trails and such on their website. I'll make that site available here when we get anything worthwhile up.
Anyone else have any maps of their routes? If all you have is a GPS file, send it to me, or post it and we can convert it to GoogleEarth so everyone can enjoy it.

I think that bikely.com offers a better way to share bike routes. I'm generally not a fan of routes on aerial photos unless I'm trying to locate something like a convenience store location. Normally I prefer a regular map presentation.

All I do is hit the Hybrid button and Zoom in close,it puts the trail name on the pic,all you gotta do is know roughly where the trail is....Lets see if this works. Ok Cool.as you can see here is a section of The Katy Trail in Portland Mo. Works Great!! This is how I look at trails all over the US.
https://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF8&...09956&t=h&om=1
I just typed Katy Trail in the "Search" box on the page and it shows one the entire esterern section using Portland Mo as your starting point.
I hope this helps

That Bikely site is pretty cool. Looks like there's lots of stuff up there. Does Bikely allow you to save routes elsewhere? And yes, some trails already do show up in GoogleMaps. Unfortunately, not in my area of the country. And I like the way Google Earth allows you to collect and modify other people's routes.
Figment, have you tried GoogleEarth (not GoogleMaps) yet? I would suggest you give it a try. The free program it requires you to run locally is well worth what you get.
Alright Supcom, how often do you see this on an internet forum? - you're right, it looks like Bikely already does what I want, and after checking it out a bit, you can download routes in GoogleEarth format. Beauty. So, I officially declare this thread terminated! Nothing to see here, move along.
