Can anyone quickly explain to me what a braze on is?

it's the type of front derailleur you have.

Some bikes have a clamp which goes around the seat tube and the front D clamps onto that.

other bikes have a braze on, which means that the bracket is integrated onto the bike and the front D is screwed onto that...


although i might be crazy b/c brazing is a type of welding...

A small fitting permanently attached to a frame. On traditional steel frames these attachments are held on by brazing, but the term "braze-on" is also used for fittings that are welded, glued, rivetted or moulded on to frames of other materials. Typical braze-ons would include cable stops and guides, water bottle cage mounts, shift lever bosses, cantilever brake bosses and cable stops, pump pegs, etc.

And rack mounts for the touring bikes. I once had a young bike mechanic call them lugs . Lugged frames have the lugs brazed on too.
