I own a mountain bike and road bike as well. I ride both. I also happen to live in one of the best places for both though.
I think your fine owning two bikes. It give you the freedom that you might just want to have any day of the week.
In our house we have 6 bikes. So its just the norm to have mutiple bikes for different reasons

If it makes you feel any better I just ordered my very first road bike.
It is a custom titanium, and I feel bad because it was way more than I should have spent on a bike.

I have a single-speed mtb and a decent road bike. For commuting I use a hybrid. So that's three different bikes and I even use them all

I have 3 complete bikes...all road right now. I have 3 framesets lying here, 1 of which is about to be built up (another roadie). I have just pulled the trigger on a Surly Pugsley.
You can't have too many bikes. As was said, the correct number of bikes to own is n+1: n=number of bikes you currently own.

I think I'm up to about twenty bikes in my garage right now. Most of them are rideable and most of them are mine.

And you are worried about buying a second bike!
Buy the road bike and enjoy it.
