Donor wanted to do even more

By Allen Howard
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Scott Wakefield is bicycling across the country, loaded with lots of water, beef jerky, a small trailer, a tent - and one kidney.

His mission is to raise money for kidney transplants after he became an anonymous kidney donor Feb. 5. "First I wanted to donate a kidney because I had a friend with diabetes (who) eventually died of kidney failure," Wakefield said. "After my operation, I realized the financial needs of donors and recipients."

Wakefield's goal is to raise $25,000 for the National Transplant Assistance Fund in Newtown Square, Pa. He is from San Diego and is a single father with a 16-year-old daughter, Brittany.

The 40-year-old cyclist rolled through Cincinnati this week. From here he will pedal through Pittsburgh en route to Maine.

"The response and assistance I have received from people has been tremendous," he said.

Contributions for his Bike Ride Across America can be sent to: NTAF Kidney Donor Fund in Honor of Scott Wakefield, National Transplant Assistance Fund, Suite 230, 3475 W. Chester Pike, Newtown Square, Pa. 19073.

Jeff Lueders, public affairs manager for LifeCenter, the Tristate organ recovery agency, welcomes the fund-raising effort.

"We are a non-profit organization and we have to depend on fund raising to carry out the awareness programs we need," Lueders said.

Contact the agency's development department at 961-5243, or LifeCenter at 558-5555.

By the way I'm in no way related to this fundraiser or anything. I just thought I would add a little exposure to what I think is a good cause.
