I for one don't appreciate your comment. My daughter runs in the special olympics and if you ever take the time to actually go to a Special Olymipcs event, you will see that the athletes there are real humans that happen to have been born with handicaps !!!! Maybe if you ever took the time to get to know a person who is "mentally handicapped" , maybe you wouldn't be so critical. And maybe you should take the time and actually look up what ****** means. Because you are using it totally WRONG !!!!!! And I'm sure you will respond to this because by the sound of your post and comments, you are a person who can easily criticize and insult others but can't take it back.
Sorry to everyone else for this rant, but this hit to close to home !!!

No need to apologise for that rant. It was very well said, and I agree with every word of it.

Nismo, can you please take a moment to read the forum guidelines.

Respectfulness... We expect our member to show respect for others. Respecting their person, their views, their time and their opinions, and their belief systems ... even if you disagree with them.

Harrassment... Harassment occurs when a member insults, attacks, and denigrates another member at any time. We have zero tolerance for taking an argument about a any topic to a personal level. For instance, the use of terms such as "idiot, moron, stupid" and other derogatory terms constitutes harassment.
Insults like "you dumb pot" and "you're still a ******" are unnecessary and frankly, do nothing to strengthen your arguments.

Some thread drift, if you will permit me...

This discussion reminded me of something I've noticed... I wonder if it's just me. It seems like whenever I'm riding with a chip on my shoulder, the drivers just seem to know it. They pass closer, blow their horns, act more impatient. I swear it's not just a perception thing. And it's not in response to anything I'm doing... I'm just riding along feeling annoyed at the next dumb@ss who insists on passing me on a blind curve or hill. It's weird.

I've noticed this too. It makes me wonder whether our attitudes can influence certain subconscious actions that we take without actually realising it. I've also noticed this phenomenon when dealing with people in other facets of life - and it's happened to many times to be just mere coincidence.

I swear to god if I could of caught up with one of the people who came close to me i would have kicked off their rear view mirror.
Were they in a convertable??? It might be a little hard to get the rear view mirror other wise. I would suggest the side mirror. Next time you're going to troll, it helps if you are at least a tiny little bit realistic.

I have only been on the road a couple of times, other than riding around the neighborhood. I have noticed that if I stay about in the middle of the lane, I don't get crowded when I do get passed. I also have been surprised that I get equal treatment at 4-way stops. Anyone else?

Chris L 06-20-03 06:58 PM

Yes, when there's little or no room to pass, I also claim the middle of the lane. I do this frequently at intersections, too. It's a fine line between being assertive and being aggressive, but it's one that's well worth treading if you have the temperament for it.

I believe that temperament would be the key word in this situation. My LBS owner has told me of a few roads to stay off, some motorists know that they can throw things at you without getting caught. Best -

Uh, see, this is an example of that whole 'flailing appendages, drawn weapons' thingy I mentioned earlier...

Its called a joke. If everyone had to consider EVERYONE's feeling before making a joke you really couldn't even tell jokes about the chicken crossing the road because some PETA bleeding heart would say that it is offensive to chickens.

I never called anyone a ****** i was merely trying to end this annoying thread in a light hearted way, but the sad truth is i could say something about guys who wear red shirts on cloudy days that like to eat ice cream with peanuts in it and somebody who wears red shirts on cloudy days that likes to eat ice cream with peanuts in it is going to message me and say that I was out of line or very offensive, so I'm not goin to apologize for anything i said in this thread. This is officially my last post on this thread so don't bother responding.

I am also a motorist, so if anybody gets mad and throws batteries at me, I don't really care if they are walking, riding, jogging, riding a horse, skateboarding, riding a scooter, in a wheelchair or whatever, they will not get away with committing a felony against me or my property.
PFFFFFTTTT.... Throwing a battery at a car is not a felony in any state. Have fun defending shooting someone cuz they threw a battery at your car. I'm sure the jury would side with you. HAHA

Dude, we don't live in a black & white world. There are some forms of behaviour that are acceptable, and others that aren't. Blatant childish name-calling falls into the latter category. Tell me, do you often go up to total strangers and call them a "dumb pot"? If not, why bother here?

As the forum guidelines quite clearly state - this is not a schoolyard rock-throwing contest. A little bit of civility is not a lot to ask.

lostinthewoods 06-20-03 11:34 PM

Just have a good SPIT and a WAVE and enjoy your ride. Nothing you do to the idiots in the vehicles will help. Heck I have reported a few cars who actually nipped me with there side mirrors and cops dont do crap anyways. Too many bigger fish to fry in Plano than some driver nipping me on my bike.

Keep your eye out for a middle age balding man in a 6 bagger silver mustang. Real Jack@$$. Ask him to get his fat tail outta his car and on a bike usually shuts him up. I have run into this same guy a few times over the last few weeks. Midway / parker area.

Oh well. I am ready for my saturday morning plano ride..woo hoo. Plenty of spit and my PUMP will be packed. ready to conquer the conrete jungle of Plano!! Long live bikers!! hehehe

Maybe its just your last post........period. I doubt it. Oh, wait, I hear your mama calling. You had better go now. Too bad this is your last post, or you could reply. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

edited for typ0 - I usually don't like to trade insults, but this fellow has brought it out in me.

KevinG 06-21-03 08:03 AM

I think this thread has proved that it is not only drivers that can be intolerant jacka$ses.
I am note pointing fingers just making an observation.

Taking the lane at an intersection is almost a must in an urban setting. Otherwise, it depends on traffic and the situation, IMO.

Personally, I generally try to encourage traffic past... if I have better visibility on a curve or hill and it's clear, I signal them by. And if they start to pass (I ride with a mirror) when it's not clear, I signal them to slow. I figure we're all better off if we try to get along. But as a result, when a driver chooses to ignore one of my warnings, putting me at peril, I get particularly peeved.

Nothing you can do, really, except stew or try to let it roll off your back. Reacting at best does nothing, and at worst escalates the problem. And, some roads are just unridable. Let the cars have 'em.

Just my $0.02.

Dougmt 06-21-03 07:48 PM

I had experiences like this in Galveston. Beautiful Island... crappy people.
It definetly put a damper on my riding...
I can also understand the rage thing.. I make a terrible victim.
Give em the the thumbs up next time and patronize them.... trust me, it's better than the rage that will build if you don't
:)

Chris L 06-22-03 03:15 AM

I'm actually thinking of buying a piano for the days when I just don't feel like riding to work. What kind of a ride do they give?

Weird though seemingly correct, Im finding the same ,I used to be "the angry commuter' but after reading lots of 'threads of wisdom' ;) from all the other commuters on the Forums my stance has slowly but dramaticaly changed .I now give them a wave when insulted or avoid confrontation in a 'Im Right ' situation , though I must admitt it can be hard at times & I expect there is a tolerance level that can be reached  Ive found that since Ive become that idiot waving & smiling ,I seem to attract a lot less aggresive , negative response from drivers , may be they think Ive escaped from the lunatic assylum:p But I do keep an open eye for rego. numbers of serious wrong doers, driving drunk & dangerious , smashing bottles ,ect. If you get too stressed it certainly wrecks your ride & your day , it takes a bit of practice & self talk but you've got to try & let it go instead of letting it boil up inside by going over & over the inccident in your mind : Your time is up thats the end of todays session :D :D :D

danr 06-22-03 10:36 PM

I mentioned it before, and I'll say it again.

I believe the best way to keep drivers from harassing you is to ride with one of those baby seats on the back of the bike. Sure, it's not very aerodynamic, but it can be used as a training tool (extra wind resistance). It will also keep riders far away since not even the lowest of Plano scum would want to wipe out a bicycle with a baby on board.

mascardr 06-23-03 09:26 AM

ChrisL... thanks for your support.

nismo400...you don't have a clue !!!! I could rip some more about your comment but than I would put myself at your level. Once again...use a dictionary if you are going to use words to insult.

That didn't work for me. I was pulling my 2 year old daughter in her Burley down a very wide neighborhood street with ample room to pass. I guy in a pickup truck chucked a water bottle at us. Needless to say I wasn't very pleased. If you're going to throw stuff at cyclists at least make it a fair fight and do it to cyclists not towing a trailer. Almost caught the guy. Don't know what I'd have done if I had, especially with daughter on board.

Be safe everyone.

Don

You'd think that in the town where our Hero Lance grew up that you'd be able to ride anywhere on the road without any problems. These drivers were probably the racers that Lance used to whoop :)

Yell all you want to at the drivers but I really don't think it's a good idea to try and kick or throw something at them. Unless of course you're packin'

Zack

I just looked it up on www.dictionary.com

and this is what I got back.

******.
A person considered to be foolish or socially inept.

is this incorrect?
