I use my regular perscription sunglasses (RayBan wrap around frames) They are metal but works fine.
You sometimes have to pay a premium if your frames are very curved.

Also there are many perscription bike (sports) shades out there

Well, you options are:
1) Laser eye surgery - much moolah but get the sunglasses of your choice
2) Contacts - too much friggin around, but you can get the sunglasses of your choice.
3) clip ons - blow off
4) Prescription sunglasses - more on this later
5) fit overs - old man look

I have tried contacts and didn't like 'em, you may though.

I tried clip-ons but they blow off.

I tried normal prescription sunglasses and were ok, but they are not wrap arounds for that added protection

I had a pair of Bolle wrap arounds with prescription insert, which were great but are now 8 years old and have just worn out, but I lovbed them!

Just last winter I got a set of Oakley M-frames that are prescription wrap arounds, the prescription is right in the lens not an insert. I have a set of darks and a set of ambers.
The cost?.....well.....for the frames, 2 sets of lenses (darks and amber), extra nosepiece and hardcase the cost was.....get ready for it.....$850 CDN.

Best move I ever made.

You DON'T have to be 70 to gain benefit from this type of fit over. To say this
the way you did is both snarky and unfair.

Anyone of these fitovers offer a huge amount of protection from dust, bugs, rain
and rocks as well as sunlight , uva & uvb for cycling on the cheap.

Sidenote: I was told by someone that the green sunglasses like these used to be common, but they're not sold anymore in the USA. People thought that because they were "protective" and green, that they were usable as welding glasses, and were getting UV eye damage from trying to use them as such--so the main company that sells them in the USA stopped selling the green ones.

The (amber/brown) overfit ones I got from Wal-Mart for $18 look quite normal, they're just a bit oversize. I was looking for the "grampa" sunglasses and almost didn't notice these others on the rack.

The place where I got my glasses had a two pair for $X sale, I just got two identical frames and paid the extra $20 to have one pair made into prescription sunglasses. I do think that for the next go round I'll invest in Transitions lenses as the constant switching between the two when running errands is a pain in the ...

When I wear my contact to ride, which is rare(the contacts, not the riding), I rock my 12 dollar drug store aviators. They cover your whole eye socket for maximum protection. Along with my skid-lid MTN bike style helmet and craptactular fixed gear conversion, I'm building up the fred points for maximum roadie contempt.

I buy disposable contact lenses. I only wear them when I'm participating in sports so $80 can last me 2-3 years.

Look at my avatar. Those are Rudy Project Kerosene with a Rx insert behind them. Stylish, not too heavy don't slide and the Rx can be easily replaced without getting new outer glasses. Not cheap but very effective. I have polarized, clear, and yellow lenses for them.

As for contacts, some people can use them. Some can't. I happen to fall into the latter category. Being a chemist who works with some rather nasty solvents, I've never been able to use contacts at work. I could use them outside of work but I've never wanted to bother since I'd wear them for very few hours a day. Not worth the hassle of inserting them before I go home or taking them out when I got to work. YMMV

Tranisition (sun sensor) lenses are great. No messing around with clip ons. As light conditions change, so do the lenses . . . automatically.

Some people love them. Some people don't. Just so there's another perspective here, I don't like them. I had a pair not too long ago. The logic seemed good -- one pair of glasses that would work in all conditions, and I wouldn't have to carry around two pairs of glasses. My experience was that they don't get dark enough when you really need them, like on a cloudless summer day, and they get too dark when you don't want them to darken at all, like on an overcast or hazy day. Also, they don't work in cars (the windshield blocks the UV light that causes the lenses to darken) which is a major strike against them, in my book. They darken (or lighten) slowly, so if you're walking from bright sun into darkness there are several minutes when you're effectively half-blind (of course, if your prescription isn't that strong, you can simply take them off, but that doesn't work for me). I think they're only available in two colors, gray and brown, and I much prefer a greenish-gray (I have my sunglasses tinted to match Ray-Ban G15 lenses -- my favorite).

I replaced them with two pairs, one clear and one with a dark tint. I'm much happier.

I got mine from a local place that just got even more local (they moved to within 3 blocks of my house) called Sports Optical. The sunglasses are in the $100 to $125 range and the Rx insert for a mild prescription was around $80 (I got them about 5 years ago). So close to $300 is about right. But that's what I normally pay for glasses anyway.

The sports glasses shield my eyes from wind more than my regular prescription. They also stay on my head better than regular glasses. I've gotten to the point where I can't ride in regular glasses because of the wind.

By the way Sports Optical will grind the outer lenses to your prescription, making the insert unnecessary. I haven't checked on that price since I use these glasses for all kinds of conditions and having multiple prescription lenses would be pricey.

Thanks CCommute. I got Ray Bans prescription sun glasses last year, but as my eyes change, it can get costly. They (Lens Discounters) also did not have the wraparound type frames available.

i don;t wear my glasses, i can only see about 20 feet down the trail, only about ten before its blurry, and 20 before i can't tell weather its a pile of leaves or a rock. so wearing swunglasses isn't a problem. my glasses are way too exspensive to wear mtbing.

Performance has some multilens glasses for pretty cheap and they will do your prescription in an insert. I don't know how much they might charge for the Rx lenses however. If you can get away with a single vision lens (no progressives or bifocals), it would be cheaper. That's what I did on mine. I just had the distance vision lenses put in because that's all I need.

I use the Bolle glasses....they're the regular sun glasses with the prescription lenses clipping into the frame behind the colored lenses. I chose this route since I don't have to change the eyeglasses when my prescription changes, just the clip in part....it's a bit less expensive and not really that much heavier. I think they're the Bolle Vigilante....have had them for several years now and they've held up well

I've tried most of what has been posted, and there is another way you might be interested in checking out:

There are clip-ons that are not clip-ons but slip-behinds. Though they are not as easy to find as clip-ons, you can sometimes find them at Longs, and at other places too. Some are better than others.

They are smaller and lighter than the fit-over types. They are much easier to slip on and off than other clip-ons. They wrap around and block wind.

They're cheap.

They're easy to carry in a pocket or handlebar bag.

I don't believe that there is even a discussion on which is
'better' here. A $100+ sport glasses or a $13>30 industrial
approved fitover glasses.

These glasses do the same job but one will save your eyes
from flying debris and rocks for well under $100 and the
sport glasses are all about fashion. A no brainer to me.

Function first....Fashion never.

I just don't wear my glasses. I take them off, put on my semi-cheap sunglasses and off I go. Maybe my eyes just aren't that bad. The only problem is reading signs before they're close, I never have a problem seeing obstacles, etc.
