Chain makes grinding sounds (Help)
Hi, I just bought a new 24speed road bike and notice it makes a grinding sound when I pedal. Seems like no matter what gear i'm in the chain goes "clank clank clank". it's worst in other gears and it gets really loud and the pedaling isn't smooth. I have looked over the chain and its not loose or anything.
sorry i'm new to road bikes/bikes with gears, i've been riding a single gear BMX bike for years now. If anyone know what that problem is I would really appreciate the help. Thanks. |
You need front derailer adjustment. It should have tension adjusters on the bottom frame tube. If that's not enough adjust the cable tension where it connects to the derailer. You basically play with tension until it's just right.. Go through all front and rear gears while your bike is upside down, and play with it. You'll see chain rubbing against the derailer, adjusting tension moves derailer left or right until there is no grind.
After, take a ride an go through gears. Adjust as needed. |
You also should post in the Mechanics forum too.

After, take a ride an go through gears. Adjust as needed. But the clank is the rear derailleur. Turn the barrel on the back of the rear derailleur till it skips up to the next bgiiest cog. Then turn it back till it dros. Now turn it just a little more till it back away form the bigger cog.:D It might go out again in the near future as it is a new bike and the cables are breaking in. I've had some that needed to be adjusted twice, and some only once. Depends on the cable. |
