I don't think they go "out of their way" to dress like that anymore than you go out of your way to dress the way you do. It's a taste thing. Their taste is (for lack of a better term) hippy-ish. I'm imagining yours is professional/clean cut? They aren't trying to be something they aren't, they are simply being themselves — its just different than you. No worries.

Bike on!

I am sure we look just as weird in our standard, multicolored, weirdly patterned, stretchy, padded, cycling garb to non bikers as these two looked to you...

In our society today you have to be tolerent of difference, whether you want to or not, its a simple fact.

America isnt the America it was when I was a kid. Its different, and so are all of us.

You dont have to agree with their hippish style, you just have to tolerate it.

Its a free country afterall...

The fact that I commented on the look of the bike doesn't mean I look down on it. In this case, however, I do, since this particular bike is of exceptionally poor quality. They're new bikes built like an old military issue bike. The military version could probably survive a nuclear war, but the new version is cheap and crappy. They rust all over in no time at all, they break and fail significantly more often than other cheap bikes. But it was mainly the way the bike was painted and "decorated"...

This is the kind of bike she was on:

Just an FYI: the OP lives in Sweden, I believe.

Back to the point: It is human nature to judge people. Whether that be by their clothes, the way they walk, the bike they ride, and, yes, their race. Some people overcome this, or at least claim they do, and see everyone neutrally. Others never get on top of it and become bigots. Most of us (I put myself here), eventually learn that stereotypes, even those with some basis in reality, are a poor substitute for understanding the individual.

That said, I pass a poorly-painted rainbow bike on my way to work every day. I love it (though I've never seen the owner).

I disagree that that is human nature. It is learned behavior, not innate nature. Those of us that "overcome" it are simply unlearning what our parents, schools and society in general has taught us. In a saner society we would not be filled with prejudices from an early age to begin with.

To each his own. They bothered you with their appearance and the bikes they ride but they didn't physically bother you. So go easy and mind your own.

I thought this thread would be a little more broad. Can't we all talk about how when we see an OCP in full kit, that he looks retentive? What message do the naked bike riders send to the OP? Why do BMX'ers have silly slogans like "No Fear" written on their clothing; do they need the reminders?

Like Imus says (& I'm paraphrasing) you have to make fun of all groups to keep it from being discrimination. See, that's what I wanted to get out of this thread; can we stretch it a little here folks?

They didn't bother me. In fact, they made me laugh. For the reasons some posters have mentioned.

Well, one thing did bother me - the very unsafe bike the girl was riding. That bike should be banned! Fork crown snapping makes for plenty of time in the dentist's chair, if you're lucky!

CDCF ... to test your theory that we can know something about a person based on their dress.
Why not post a picture of yourself and we can make guesses at what kind of person you are based on your looks. Then you can let us know how accurate our predictions are.
