cape cod

so i will be going to cape cod in a couple of weeks, and was wondering what the terrain is like there, is it very hilly, flat, etc. i am about to get a specialized P.2 which can be either single speed or geared. i would like to use all of this bikes options, i have an extra wheelset, which also happened to come of a p.2, that will be converted for single speed use. what size chainring do you recomend? and can you recomend a chain with a quick link, i hate using a chain tool!

I have been bicycling on Cape Cod for most of my life. The terrain there is rather level there with low hills depending upon where on Cape Cod you are. Most of the area I went riding on was pretty level as it was right next to if not near the ocean.

Enjoy your time. Let me know how it went.

would a single speed be a good choice or should i leave it geared? i will probably bring both with me, as putting on a rear derailluer, changing tires, and hooking up a rear shifter will take roughly 20-30 minutes.

I just rode the whole length of Cape Cod this past weekend on an MS ride. I wouldn't say it's "hilly", but there are sections that aren't flat either. There were some rollers around Sandwich (near the mainland end), and there are some rollers around Truro / Provincetown (at the very end). From the times I've ridden on the Cape, I've had more issues with the wind then I've had with the rolling terrain.

There was a group of riders on the MS ride that were doing the whole thing on fixies; I spoke to one of them and he said he was using a 48x18 which he said was working out pretty well.

The Cape is a *great* place to ride. While I generally don't ride on trails, the Cape Rail Trail is actually pretty good (i.e. generally not all that crowded), and there are also plenty of good on-street routes.

Where are you going to be staying?
