bicycle records
I found out that i have a talent for sprinting.
Being new to riding in my 3rd race in a handicap i finished the race in the last group but crossed the line at 56km/hr. This was with no tail or head wind and on a flat less then perfect road. I think i could of gone faster as i still had a couple of gears to go, so i think i could of reached 60km/hr without too much trouble. Just out of curiousity, what is the record for a flat sprint on a regular bike? I would like to get into sprinting as i think i can get a lot better in it. Anyone know? |
Top speeds during sprint finishes in pro races are as high as 75 km/h. It takes more than twice the power to go from 56 to 75 km/h, all other things equal. If you reach 56 using 500 W, you'd need 1100 W to reach 75. Going from 56 to 60 takes an extra 20% power, which is more than you might think...
A dedicated "sprint time trial" could possibly see even higher top speeds. |
My conversion skills are fuzzy.
75km/h equals ~ 32mph, correct? If so, thats damn fast. |

This was not with a pack. It was one other rider who carried me to 45km/hr before i made a sprint by myself. From 45kph to 56kph was by myself.

I don't want to pee in your Wheaties but...
56KpH is nothing to sniff at. Good sprint. But, unless you maintained this sprint for quite a while (several minutes), it's really nothing to write home about, much less talent. Not to say you aren't talented. You may well be. I presume we're talking about a standard road bike on level ground under otherwise normal conditions, correct? There are circumstances that would make this feat extraordinary. |
Well I wasn’t with a group (one other guy), and the road is less then perfect, I new and not fit so to do this at the end was hard for me, and its on the coast in winter (the track) so it was very windy (though none or little head wind, more side wind)

My coversion is rough as well, but 56 kph is what 32 mph? I'm not trying to be a jerk, I consider myself to be average at best, and I can sprint 30 mph with no lead out.

Type this into Google: convert 56 kph to mph Ta da! 34.7967868 mph! Google does LOTS of things. |
I can hit 35 mph and hold it for about 400 meters on a stretch near my house (45mph road at 1:00AM).
Sure, I'm winded afterwards, but it's nothing too big... |
I can only hit 51.7km/h for 5~8secs on a flat as long as I don't get any head wind, so I'd say you're more talented at sprinting than I am :D
51.7km/h = 32mph (I'm only reading the max value on my computer) |
I can hit 36 MPH going downhill on a suspension fork hydrid with two prosthetic feet.:D

Some record recumbents are at this site:
http://www.speed101.com Although they are not "regular bikes". |
I hit 52 on sunday on a regular ride with ease (by myself). So if i was fresh i think i would hit over 60 on a flat with no problems.
Im not very fit, so wheni did 56km/h in that race after 40km of racing, its not too bad for me. |
