I am new at biking. I have been using my old crappy Wal-Mart bike to bike to the gym its 2 miles away. But my step-dad is going to move down here and he is also getting into biking. So I want to get a good Bike so we can go 20-25 miles. But I have no clue what to buy I am 5'8 and weigh 160 pounds. How big should the bike be that I get? What kind is a good one?

Go to a bike shop instead of a department store for many reasons. Some of which are:

1) The people there know about bikes.

2) They sell bikes instead of toys.

3) They have bikes in a variety of sizes.

Any bike you buy in a shop will be roughly comparable to what you will buy in any other shop for the same price (for a similar bike style).

Your basic decisions are simple.

How much do you want to spend?

What type of riding do you want to do? (road, mountain, gravel trails)

Check out several bike shops if you have several around you, and pick the shop (and bike) that you like best.

Do you have a budget in mind?

Yea I am not trying to spend more then 600 if I can help it. There is a Marin on Craigslist that is really close to me but I didnt know that frame size depended on the size of the person so I dont know if it would fit me or not.

There are online calculators out there that are good enough, try googling. I can't remember the exact URLs.
