Tune up - how long does it take avg?
 

Hi:

When I purchased my bike, the shop told me to take it in after approx. 20 hours for a tune-up, adjust the cables.

Does anyone know how long a tune-up like this usually takes (the first tune up)?

They aren't charging for the service, but i was just wondering...

usually, the bike comes with a manual and teaches you how to put a whole bike together, so i adjust mine myself (i learned myself through trial and error how to tune up bikes) anyway, it takes me 5-20 MINUTES depending on the stuff I'm tuning. it also depends on the size of your bike shop. if they have many other bikes to work on then yea, it might take 20 hours. But 20 hours all together spent on one bike wouldn't be worth it. I'd say buy a new bike if some kid asked me to put 20 hours in a bike.

I think yer confused to his questions Shadowrider... not 20 hours to work on it.. 20 hours of riding time...

Anyways, Mister, usually it should only take about 15-20 minutes, if he shop isn;t too busy.. they just adjsut your cables.. maybe doublecheck your fit.. you shouldn't be without the bike for very long at all

My shop gave me a claim tag and told me it would be done in the afternoon. I guess they were busy.

The cables move and streach so taking it back after 20hrs is good, but I like to take this time to find if I have a lemmon. This is the time to break hard and shift a lot, more than you need to.

A tune-up: Adjust the hubs, true the wheels, adjust/trim the brakes, adjust the gears, adjust the headset, wipe down the bike and check all the hardware, can take between thirty minutes and an hour. A basic check, on a new bike, will usually take around ten/fifteen minutes. You may still need to leave it for a while, if the day is booked.

Technically Rev. Chuck is correct. Unless something is seriously wrong 30 minutes to an hour is all it should take. However, there are other factors to consider. One is how busy the shop is. Another is how much they value you as a customer.

From the shop that I've bought two Specialized mountain bikes they have done this type of work while I waited. They were happy to let me watch and answer questions and are willing to point out things for me to check for on my own.

From the shop that I bought my Litespeed road bike the jackass owner promised me that my 30 day checkup would be done by the next day. Five days later and after repeatedly being told on the phone that they were just too busy I walked in and surprised them while they were all sitting on their butts drinking. They were no other bikes on the bike stands that they were working on.
