for about 350.00 where can i get a bike that will give me a good workout. I have a very nice hardtail but would like something to use when that bike is down. I would also like something that will help me loose weight( i get to board riding on the road with my mtb, too slow). I fool around to much on my mtb to lose any weight.

Bikes don't give you a good workout, your effort gives you a good workout. There are no shortcuts. Ride more, ride harder.

It doesn't matter. Comes down to which one will motivate you to ride more. In one hour, you'll exert the muscles, hurt and lungs the same and burn the exact same amount of energy with any bike. If you're fit, you can burn off 700-800 calories/hr, around 500 if you're out of shape. Just that with a nice high-end bike, you'll go faster and farther than with a low-end bike. However, the workout will be exactly the same.

A better work out? If you want to achieve the same speed that you would on the mountain bike then yes you would probably get a "better work out." TRANSLATION: That bike is slower than the one you presently own.

That bike is a cruiser, meant for strolling around. It ain't built for speed.

You get the best workout from riding your bike. Whatever you think is fun to ride will motivate you to ride more often and for longer.

Buying a heavy, sluggish bike because more work and you think it'll give you a better workout doesn't work because it's too easy to think up reasons not to ride today.

Get the bike that's gonna be a blast to get out and ride. The one that you can't wait for the weekend because you know you'll get to ride all day. That's the bike that will give you the best workout, because you'll be inspired to ride lots.

Edit: for most of us, the faster the bike, the more fun it is to ride, and the more we ride them. That's my excuse, at least...

To me bike riding is both a fun activity and also a good aerobic workout. I think both have to be taken into consideration and neither in isolation.
