Places to check if a bike's for sale is stolen
I've been checking craigslist in my area for a used bike. If I find one I'm interested what are some steps I can take to see if it's a stolen bike?

Ask questions. The real owner should be able to answer them. Also, ask to see the original receipt.
You should also avoid sellers who are actually pawn shops.

^vague ads for bikes missing wheels like this^ = red flag
ridiculously low price = red flag
bike way to big/small for the person selling it = red flag
as mentioned- the real owner should be familiar with the bike
red flag does not mean it IS stolen but you should dig deeper to see whats up.

Yeah, I couldn't produce a receipt either. My most frequently used bike I got at a University auction. I sometimes wonder if it had been reported stolen at one time, but it is legitimately mine now. I still couldn't produce my auction receipt.

I have receipts for all but one of my bikes. That one came off eBay,and I have a screen shot of the listing. Good idea to have these in case the bike's stolen to prove it's yours.
