Cycling Rocks .... Literally
 

Until this morning I had never had anything tossed at me from a car window or whatever.

Today - I had a pedestrian throw a lump of rock my way.

I was riding with two other guys and had just gone past a pedestrian who was walking the other direction on the footpath.

Next thing - I hear and feel a thump on the side of my helmet. Nothing serious so we keep riding. One of the other guys saw him throw but just thought it was a small tree nut.

I thought it was annoying but nothing more until I looked at my helmet later. There's some chalky residue from a rock and a nice sized dent in the helmet. It could have killed me if it hit the wrong place. I wish now that I realised the severity of the situation and tracked the guy down. The next cyclist might not be so lucky.

I've been hit by projectiles before, I wore an egg on a commute two years ago. This one came from a car, so I took down the #, paid a visit to my local police officer and got the guy fined. It can be very serious if it hits in the wrong place. I'm surprised none of the people you were riding with saw the dent in your helmet sooner.

You can see the damage here. There's a diagonal crease to the left of the BELL logo. The logo itself is pretty mangled and you can still see the chalky residue from the rock below the logo.

Even If you thought that the guy threw something less then a rock, I would have definitely stopped and knocked da F&*k his brains out. I don't understand how you just kept riding. I'm glad you Ok though!

What a tool. Glad you weren't hurt, that could have been ugly. One more reason to wear a helmet.

And Chuvak is right - Next time someone tosses a projectile at you, you need to stop and smack him upside the head.

Damn - that sucks. Next time definately write the plate # down even if it just a cream pie he throws.

Unfortunately, not really an option when that person is in a car. :( (Chris L's case)

The guy wasn't in the car, he was a pedestrian.

It was all pretty sureal. You don't expect a rock hurtling toward you. If I realised what was going on at the time I would have turned back, got a good look at him and then got the cops.

I could have even got the other guys to keep watch while I found the police.

It's always easier to deal with a situation in hindsight.

I had a glass bottle thrown at me yesterday from a car coming in the opposite direction. It landed very close to me, but didn't hit me. I whipped around to give chase, but he was long gone before I could get a license plate number.

Stupid $#**&$%! What did he think would happen if he would have hit me with that bottle?
