Legitmately obtained, by you. As in it might've been stolen before.

Thats why a cheap cable lock will probably prevent most thefts, they keep honest men honest.

If by most thefts, you mean where you leave your bike for < 5 mins. Then yes.

I'm quite aware that the Federal Government spent a lot of money to renumber US666 to US491 due to ignorant superstition. Your tax dollars at work.

And of course the road has the same fatality statistics. Why would anyone expect otherwise?

But thank you for noticing.

My brother in law spent many years residing in a home with the street address of 666. When he sold the house, the buyer insisted that the address be changed before she would close the deal. The township consented, and changed it to 6661. Pretty silly really, but at least she was happy.

I suspect most bike thefts are crimes of opportunity. The thief just happened to be near a bike that was unlocked (or not securely locked) and takes it.

We were driving down to Annapolis, stopped at a Rest Stop and I had my bike on the Rear Rack, wich had a pretty good Kryptonite Cable Lock. My friend came back out to find some fellow who came over and parked near our car and was just studying the bike closely, and then started touching the frame to see if it could be had, which was stupid since we were only inside for about 10 min. I suspect a real bike thief would have had the job done in a couple of minutes. If you have a "Force Multiplier" like a lock or even just a sheet over the bike, it seems to help, but people will keep looking for an opportunity.
