It is public knowledge that I have years of experience in hand gun timed obstacle course type competition shooting with my S&W model 29 .44 mag. ( same as dirty Harry :p) I always scored in the top half of 50 to 100 competitors. Almost a couple of wins. Want my bike? Do ya feel lucky punk? Well do ya? Maybe I'll get some of those "protected by Smith and Wesson" stickers. Didn't think of that. Am I nuts? ;) |
Right now I'm thinking about putting an eye bolt through the 2x4 that the bike hook is attached to, run a long cable (like a Kryptflex lock) through it & weave it through the front wheel & frame, with the cable locked through a u-lock already running through the back wheel and frame.

My intuition is that using strong locks like U-locks, attached to something solid, will mean that each bike would require minutes to deal with. I don't think criminals want to spend long periods of time in a house. I've been thinking of this problem too. Perhaps a cement block with a heavy metal "U" sticking out of it. |

I learned an odd thing when scumbags broke into my garage and stole my bike. The bike was hanging by the front wheel from a hook in the roof. In order to get it down, you had to handle it just right or the weight and awkwardness of the shape would cause you to lose control of it and bang is on the ground and whatever else was around it. This made noise.
When the scumbags were in the garage, one was lifting my car's CD player while the other focussed on the bike. The guy dealing with the bike must have made a lot of noise because the guy going for the CD player left without taking any of the CDs (easy to fence) or anything else. This showed me that noise is the worst enemy of the burglar. Thus, what you might do is hook up a noise maker that goes off when someone takes the bikes off the hook. A bell or electronic alarm might be all you need. I like leaving other, cheaper bikes unlocked to give them something to steal that you don't care about, too. Ray |

Am I nuts? ;) If I were a burglar, I'd pay special attention to such a posted location; and wait for the right time to steal some especially worthwhile booty; or if not patient enough to assure that the resident had left, be prepared to shoot first. |

I always thought that those stickers would be counterproductive.

When I see them I think they may be fake, and the only thing they have is the stickers. I would not challenge someone with a gun. But a stranger might not know that. They could assume I would and shoot me. Or just leave the garage alone. Who knows? I'm not going to risk my life for a bicycle or any other material thing. NO way. I have two kids, they only have one parent. I can get another bicycle, a better one. I'm not going to risk Baileys life for a bugulary either, but how does a stranger know for sure? He could do some damage if you are not armed. I would like strangers to think that I would. But he can't get up onto something like a fence or a car. All you have to do is get up high enough. Edit: All you have to do is bend down and pat him. |

My favorite garage security is a string attached to the door. When the door is opened, the string pulls the trigger on a wall mounted shotgun!
That, and I have a nice big compost pile in which to place the body! ;) |

Mainly I think those stickers scream "Guns stored here. Wait till I'm gone then come on in. Everything must go!!" I suspect one can make quite a bit of money selling a stolen handgun if one hangs out with criminally minded people.

I have beware of the dog signs all over the place. Even though I have a small dog it has a deep tone bark like a much bigger dog. Unless you see him you would think he is huge. Also a mad little dog that has teeth already proven to go right through a hand with one bite, and claws that tear. And they have faster reactions than humans. You're going to bleed.
Am I nuts? ;) Mess with any dog on it's property and you are going to bleed and bleed and bleed. |

Have you heard of that trick where you throw the dog a steak? One guy broke into someone's home, and stole a lot of valuables, and stole the Rottweiler too!

Shiny new POS wal-mart bike leaning against the wall. Seriously, think about what would be worth stealing from a thief's perspective not yours. They're going to pass up the Trek 460, Specialized Hardrock comp, Giant Rincon hanging from the rafters to nab a perfectly good bike sitting there against the wall. Jokes on them! Most thieves don't have a 4 space Thule roof rack to carry that many bikes anyway. They'd probably be riding it away. |
