The Mountain Tamer quad! Featured in Recumbent Cyclist News #85 Nov/Dec 2004

Almost bought one, but decided on the Greenspeed tandem instead.

that's the one - damn difficult to find on "teh interwebz". I seem to remember it being 4wd but it's actually rear 2wd.

"Unfortunately the Mountain Quad is out of production for the foreseeable future." - bummer

That is bad az!

Nachoman 12-01-07 08:49 AM

Two wheels good. Four wheels bad.

deraltekluge 12-01-07 11:05 AM

Quads may not be legal to ride on streets and bike paths. I think the definition of "bicycle" covers only up to three wheels in most, if not all, jurisdictions.

For example, here's the definition for Washington State:

RCW 46.04.071

Bicycle.

"Bicycle" means every device propelled solely by human power upon which a person or persons may ride, having two tandem wheels either of which is sixteen inches or more in diameter, or three wheels, any one of which is more than twenty inches in diameter.

JunkyardWarrior 12-01-07 11:22 AM

if the 4 wheel bike isnt any wider than a 3 wheel bike than i dont see any problem with back roads and sidewalks......yea i know but the sidewalks here are for the most part empty cept for an occasional bicycle....and noway would i ride it in a bike lane....unless it was wide enuff for me to feel comfortable....even then it would be rare

they're building extra wide sidewalks and bike paths here so it will be easier once thats done......the roads here arent very bicycle friendly nevemind quads

v1k1ng1001 12-01-07 02:51 PM

off-road recumbents seem like a horrible idea to me.

Thus....the title....quad.

Yeah, but... legal definitions don't always match mathematics and science. For instance, tomatoes are botanically fruits, but legally vegetables.

Please explain!

I'm going to guess that if you were hiking up a nice secluded fireroad and I came bombing down the hill at you, all Dukes of Hazard sideways, that you might be pretty horrified! ;)

But as my Dad used to say, "Don't knock it 'til you've tried it!"

I highly recommend a Greenspeed GTO with a Rohloff rear hub. Serious off-road fun with MORE than 2 wheels! :p

While I agree with you and your dad, there are a healthy majority of interweb trolls who believe the exact opposite.

Nice thread. Caused me to do some research, where I stumbled onto this:

But that's the whole point, those things would be worthless on anything other than a fireroad. If I took any of these on my easiest singletrack, I'd have to stop every fifteen feet.

Furthermore, who'd want to pedal it up the fireroad to begin with? Heck, who'd want to figure out how to transport it to the fireroad?

I suspect these quads are good for getting attention on internet forums and taking up space in the garage. I'll stick with my old hardtail for now.
