@#!%%& Leg Warmers!
This summer I found some excellent bib shorts, and rather than buy tights for cold weather I bought leg warmers. Voler. Good stuff, and works as advertised.
Except that the damned things tend to slip down after several miles of riding, leaving a band of skin between the short's gripper and the top of the leg warmer. And they do fit, so it's not an issue of sizing. Any ideas out there about how to keep them up? |
Staples.

I wear mine over my shorts ... they seem to stay put just fine.
|
Do you put them on under your shorts? That's how I do it and I've never had a problem with them slipping down. It might be a size issue if they still fall down.

Yup--under. Honestly, they go on nice and snug, so I doubt it's a size issue. Thanks for the quick responses, BTW.

Are they long enough? Mine come up a good 10 inches above my knees.
|
Gorilla Glue?
|
Are they pulled up high enough to start with? Mine need to be above the quads--nearly to my crotch--or else my quads push them down. I had thought it was my calves pulling them down but determined (with knee warmers) that it was the quads.

I am ashamed. No one has mention..... you need bigger quads. :p
Seriously, I pull mine up to within an inch or two of the top of my leg. No problems with slippage. Oh and under the shorts. |
Go buy tights.

Sadly I have also reached this conclusion. I have both knee warmers and leg warmers. In theory I love them. But it just doesn't matter if I put the leg warmers outside the shorts, or inside the shorts, there's always that patch of exposed flesh getting cold.
|
Don't buy anything new yet. Pull them up "as high as you can" before you give up on them. Then if they wiggle around and slip down a few inches it's no big deal.
|
Wait, I remembered one more thing! I wear my knee/leg warmers pretty much all the time (yes, under my work pants because I have PFS and keeping my knees warm helps a LOT) and when I first started doing this I noticed that they would slip down no matter how far I pull them up. I kept pulling and pulling until they were as far as they would go but it still wouldn't work...I was frustrated to say the least.
Finally, I realized that they were getting PULLED down not falling down. I pulled up the bottoms so it was just barely loose around my knee so that when my knee bends, it no longer pulls the top of the warmer down. Problem solved! |
Well, I have never tried this, but years ago a Beauty Contest entrant used hair spray on her bottom to keep her swim suit in place. It might work for leg warmers. If you try it, let us know.

The problem with a lot of leg warmers is that leg warmer manufacturers think that people have short little legs. Same with tights manufacturers.
I have one pair of leg warmers that is the proper length for me, and one pair of tights that is the proper length for me. The rest of my leg warmers and tights are just a bit too short ... about 2-3 inches. With the short leg warmers, I still pull them up all the way (just about to my crotch), but this means that they come about 3 inches above my ankles. I wear enough other stuff around my ankles to keep them warm, so that's not a problem, it just looks a little odd. And yes, as Jacobi mentions, they have to be loose around the knee. Not only does that help keep them up, but it also protects the knee from other problems. |
yeah, i had some that either stretched out or i lost weight...one pair fits fine, i think it's the voler ones. The others slip down and drive me nuts. I think if you have big quads or something, but i'm more of a slender type...

It is best to pull them up high and stress relieve them. Hold on to the top so they cannot slide down and bend the knee several times. This is probably the same as pulling the bottoms up toward the knee so the bottom is not pulling them down.
|
I used several of these excellent suggestions on my 25-mile club ride this morning: I pulled the leg warmers up so that there was an overlap of several inches under my shorts, and I made sure they weren't pulling too tight at the knees. They slipped down a couple of inches during the ride, but stayed essentially in place, and no cold patches 'tween short and leg warmer.
Thanks, all! |
These should do the trick;)
