How wide is the rim?
rim width determines maximum and minimum tire width.

ok, well, you can just take a ruler and measure it. Rough number is ok.
1" wide rims (outer size) have a recommendation of 1.1"~1.4" wide tires for instance.

If it is a Mavic, the last two digits in the name tell you the internal width. So that rim would be a 19mm
The other factors affecting tyre width and rims are bike geometry and rim strength. Generally speaking, the narrower the tyre, the higher a pressure it needs. Some rims just won't take a high-pressure tyre.
As for bike geometry, if you take a bike designed for 2" tyres and stick a 1" tyre on it, the bike's handling may be compromised. I found this out by personal experience . . .

I use Mavic 717 rims and use Conti Grand prix tyres. These are the width of Roadie slicks and are high pressure tyres. That is something to remember because with high pressure tyres- you find out if the rims are on the way out. I do keep a pair of Old 217 rims for the road tyres and these are still in perfect condition. If you pump the tyres up to pressure and find the Braking surface goes remotely concave- Don't use them for high pressure tyres
