Up And Coming Bike Thief
Surfing the net, I came across a post that read....
RE: Thanks from an up and coming bike thief.
This jack a-- somehow was able to steal not one, but two bikes recently without getting and was proud to say, he can break into any bike lock.
As someone suggested, among other things, we all should do....
WRITE to:
Citywide Administrative Services Commissioner Martha Hirst and ask her to allow bicycles into all City-owned buildings:

It would help a lot of folks make the switch to cycling to work if they felt the bike was secure during the day. My definition of secure: a locked facility where the bikes are out of sight, provided by the employer - not just an outdoor bike rack.
As for anyone who boasts about bike theft, a full and frank expression of my feelings would contravene many of the forum guidelines.

The post was on "Craigs List", New York City Section.
What people don't realize is that many if not most of the bikes sold on auction are stolen. I've met at least 5 people posting stolen bikes and business is good from what I understand. A while back I posted "Should I buy a stolen bike". It was from a seller on Craigs List that posted a brand new Trek 1000 for a couple of hundred bucks.
What gets me folks is that it's so out in the open. I can assure you that Ebay is the same way as those posting on Craigs List also go there. In fact, Ebay could care less and tons of stolen items are sold through that site.
All I can say for commuters in Manhattan is to ride $50.00 junk bikes and carry $250.00 worth of chains, Ulocks and cables.

I'm not sure what an online auction - or any venue that advertises merchandise for sale - can do about stolen goods. They can't vett every item that's put up for sale.
If someone has reason to believe an item at auction is stolen, i think they'd need to report it to the police in that state. The auction house can & will ban sellers shown to engage in conduct against venue rules &/or the law.

In the old days around here the county paid twenty five cents bounty for the ear of a stray dog. Maybe we could institute the same program for bike theives. Of course as they have two ears the bounty hunter could cheat the system. Hmmm, maybe we should make that genitals instead.
