helmet fitting

I have a wonderful bell that I won in a raffle, but its too big and with the amount of riding I do now, I feel I should have something that fits better.

I can order a hemet online for less than I would pay in a store, but I'm concerned about a good fit- will I be ok with measuring my head and ordering the appropriate size online, or is it important to go into a store and get help finding the right fit?

In other words, how precice a science is fitting a helmet? Thanks!

I'd advise trying them on. I almost bought a Specialized lid until I tried it on - it was way too long and narrow for my fairly round head whilst the Giro I bought fits well.
Currently riding an MTB with a split personality - commuting, touring, riding for the sake of riding, on or off road :)

Richard D is right. When I was looking for a helmet I went into the lbs and tried on 2 or 3 different brands. I really wanted a Garneau helmet but found them to not fit properly. The only one that worked for me out of everything I tried was a Giro.

All of the helmets pass the same standards. The only thing left is fit.

I got a new helmet the other day and all the helmets looked pretty much the same but only one fit well. And it fit much much better then any of the others. You can't try them on in mail order. Well, you can, just the turn around time between fittings is a tad bit long.
