Used Roadmaster
What, if anything, would this Roadmaster be worth?
http://images.craigslist.org/0101080...b9f600f1fd.jpghttp://images.craigslist.org/0101050...2f1000df8d.jpg Needs a front wheel, obviously, and the chain's rusted, beyond that I don't have many more details such as year or components. |
Next to nothing. It is a department store bike, just like what is sold at Target, WalMart, etc. Cheaply made from heavy tubing, with low-end components, and dubiously assembled by untrained store employees.
That's what I thought, but a second opinion never hurts.
Try to sell it at the local yacht club. I'm told they like old Roadmasters and Schwinns because they make good boat anchors and you don't have to pull them back up - just cut the rope.
I'm not trying to sell it, I just found it on craigslist and was curious.
It almost looks like some kind of folder. Don't listen to every one else it is repairable In just 4 easy steps:
1: Lift headset cap off and roll bike out from under it. 2: Roll in a new C'Dale and attach headset cap 3: Adjust all drive components, and seat for proper operation and fit. 4: Throw away headset cap and buy a new one |
With a wheel, and functioning perfectly, I could sell that bike locally for $35. As it is, nothing.
I'd offer $10 and use it for a target at the range.
Ok, you all can stop flogging the dead horse now.
And next time you could try being a bit original. |
You haven't told us yet, how much was it being sold for?
I bought a Huffy just about like that at a police auction for $10. I think I could have gotten it for $5 if I had waited a minute before bidding.
It is real common to see bikes like that that have been ridden very little. I was just down at Academy, and they have some similar bikes for $59. So you figure a like-new one isn't worth over maybe $25 when selling used. If you bought a new wheel at a bike shop, that would set you back $40 or more. So it's basically worth scrap value or $5 or so. It's also not uncommon to see a bike like that out on the garbabe pile. |
If you use your imagination and pretend its a spaceship or a motorcycle its priceless
i just got one of these from a friend. they weigh about 50lbs and the components are crappy. if you are anywhere close to knoxville tn I'll give you one identical to the one in the picture (w/ a front wheel) for free if you'll come get it.
A complete working bike can be found in most places for $10. This makes that bike worth nothing.
It's not worth much as an ITEM--but my old Roadmaster has been very valuable as an EXPERIENCE.
I got one several years ago for free (it had been sitting in my dad's garage gathering dust.) I took it home and fixed what was wrong with it, then rode it. I tried various experiments with it (seat positions, different handlebars, derailleur adjustments, replacing the freewheel, etc.) If you're working on a $1000 bike and you break it, you feel bad. If you're working on a $10 bike and you break it, then you improvise. So a $10 bike is less intimidating to work on, especially if you're new to bike mechanics. |
Offer $10 and then ride it off ramps into the ocean until it won't pedal anymore. Good for practicing acrobatics? Get people to pledge you 10 cents a mile for how far you can ride it before it falls apart and donate it to the charity of your choice? If you are a pretty strong rider you could go in search of out of shape people with inflated cycling egos and have some fun.
