Crossed patterns are for torsional strength.

Radial spoking is for slightly less light weight and increased rigidity, usually on the front wheel (since it doesn't have much need for torsional strength).

Radial spoking is hard on hubs, so wheels should not be built with radial spoking unless the hub is designed for it.

so torsional strength would for the rear wheel resisting the tendency for distortion due to the chain pulling on the hub and the rim trying to catch up?

Yes. And the reverse with hub-type braking.
And front disk brakes are better with cross rather than radial for same reason.

unless you have an isopulse rear like me in which one side is 3 cross and one side is radial.
