The Clear Channel stations in my area...
...& what they are going to do to help cycling here in Siouxland.
As many of you know I am part of and have helped form a non-profit organization called The Siouxland Trails Foundation to benefit the rec. trails and bike routes here in the Siouxland area. Part of this will involve the media in all its forms.
Part of my responsibilities to help this ride take place is to come up with a budget so the foundation knows what it will cost to fund the ride. Part of my responsibilities is to contact all of the media venues to find out wht, if any cost is required to have them involved, ie: a article in the paper, a story on the TV news and a live broadcast from any of the radio stations. So far it will not cost anything for the foundation to utilize the media in this fashion.
Part of the radio media in this area includes 5 Clear Channel Stations, 2 of which I listen to on a regular basis. They are well aware of whats happened at the Clear Channel stations on other areas regarding the comments, and suggestions made by the DJ's, especially the station in Cleveland & they are aware of The meeting between John Hogan, & the executive director of the LAB, & the results of that meeting & what will be done about the problem.
After contacting Clear Channel here in Sioux City the person I talked to wants Clear Channel to be the sole radio sponsor of the ride. What that means at this point I do not know. There is a foundation meeting on the 25th at which time we will discuss who we want to be the media sponsors. Should we decide it is to be Clear Channel then me or another member of the foundation will meet with the appropriate people at Clear Channel to discuss how they will help us with this event.
Now this has very little if anything to do with Clear Channle making amends for the mistakes made at other stations ubt it certainly does not hurt them.
In fact it has more to do with Clear Channel working with a non-profit organization, in this case The Siouxland Trails Foundation, to better improve this particular community. Which IMO is part of what a radio station should be doing for/with a community.
So contrary to what some of you may think about the Clear Channel stations through out the country they are not all bad. And its unfair to put a label on all of them for the mistakes of a few.

I do have a suggestion for a ride jersey though, on the back of the jersey:

On the front of the Jersey:
Ca-CHING !
and maybe a picture of a lemming or sheep.
Good Luck with the ride, I hope you use another sponsor though.

I think Dan might be a bit harsh in his opinion... but to each his own... I agree that CC is way too big for it's own good.. even here in SoCal, they own about 1/2 the radio stations on the air..... however, if they are willing to help out a charity such as N_C's, more power to them.. use some of those corporate dollars for good... and if by having them as sole radio sponsors, they can get the word out, and raise awareness of cycling issues, all the better... don't let a few bad apples ruin the bunch...

Dan has it right...Listen to their content. They often send their broadcast from stations far away. No local DJ's . too expenisve. Their play list does not allow for new music- just same old retreads. PR out of guilt and maybe fear of citizen reaction to the FCC. Can we be bought for a promise of better beavior. Meanwhile news content and music content is more limited and censored.
I could not be bought off to wear that jersey for any price.
Story from Minot, ND. Had a chemical spill hazard incident. Local police tried to warn local citizens through the radio to avoid the hazardous area.
No local dj's were available..No engineer even. Station on automatic. Signal being received from network far away. Could not use local medium to warn local citizens. No one at home.
These people are doing you no favor.
I could not be bought off to wear that jersey for any price.

Look, CC has been caught with their pants down. While their corporate attitude may change, I doubt it will, down deep, where it counts. That shouldn't prevent us from taking avantage of them every chance we get.
If you still question CC's morals and intentions, just look at the case in Houston. The high-profile DJ's lip off and make their despicable remarks. CC get called out over these remarks. Who gets canned over this deal? The high-dollar, high-profile DJ's who made the remarks? No, it was some faceless, dime a dozen program director. True, he was culpable in the rebroadcast of the remarks, but a truly repenant management would have set the DJ's out at the curb for some public ass-whipping.
Wanna bet the Houston program manager already has a new job at another radio station?

Its real easy to tell that some of you have no love lost for CC. But that's no excuse for saying they are all bad. Trust me not all of them are as bad as you may think. And I thought I held a grudge when it came to certain issues. WOW!

NC...On principal, yes- I detest monopoly in the media. News, music, entertainment stink in the US. OVerall, you are happy with network tv. Without a satellite dish, I would not own a tv.
Clear Channel is the force that will homogonize radio.Radio has been somewhat insulated from monopolies. Yes, I am community radio oriented. Centralization and marketing from some corporate headquarters will not diversify content.
I have listened to Clear Channel in San Diego- their dj's are obnoxious,their content drivel. I hope in your town you might have independent radio. Try it.
