What is the fastest anyone here has gone on there road bike
|
Probably ask in the Road forum for that. Fastest I've gone on my cruiser was 29 mph on a downhill. I think most serious riders have probably exceeded that by a good bit at some point. There was a news report a while back of a lady in California being ticketed for going 65-70 mph on a long downhill. There's a couple of youtube videos of people going very fast (100+ mph) on downhill mountain bikes with varying results.

47 mph for me.
We have very few places where the road is both steep enough and straight enough to allow high speeds. Even those 47 mph needed a stiff tailwind and my full effort in the top gear. |

78mph?!?!?!? holy cow.
according to my bike computer, 40mph going down a nice straight-away. personally followed a roadie(i was in a car) going down a switchback covered country road, most likely 50-60mph, since he was gone in a flash. i guess you gotta just lean into those turns! |
I've just tipped 90km/h (56mph), that was in good desending conditions, but before I learned Linus Gerdemann's death tuck technique which I will hopefully be able to apply on the same desent later this year.

I've since moved to wired. ;) |
I found some facinating values for highest speed when I did a search. My numbers are 45 MPH with a full touring load on a Miyata 1000 at 11,000 feet altitude and 70 MPH in a hard-shelled trike at 7,000 feet.

Something in excess of 70 kph going down Sinclair Canyon towards Radium BC.
I know it was over 70, but I don't how much. Shortly after seeing the 70 figure on the speedo, the single front pannier, started off an aerodynamic front wheel wobble. I was... a bit busy, dealing with that, to look at the speed for a little while. I know of one couple on a tandem that on that same stretch went off the clock (i.e. over 99 kph) |
thanks for the replies people.

I hit 40 mph once pedaling fairly hard on a steep downhill, but was certainly out of my comfort zone. Thought about it later and realized I have no need to go that fast -- so I don't have any burning plans to try to best the 40mph mark.

52 mph on US321 north of Lenoir, NC. It was being repaved or widened and we had one side of the freeway to ourselves. Scared the hell outta me, I'd do it again in a second.

I now brake a little going down the hill now to keep my speed in the low 30's. I really don't have the need or anything to prove to go any faster down this hill and risk injury to myself. :D |
