Fred Confessions (Chipcom's Thread)
I must confess, I really like those super-heavy Cheng Shin tires for everyday commuting. I can spend a lot extra on Schwalbes and Paselas (which I also love,) but since my commuter LHT is never really about weight,(just added a kickstand,), it's fine. I am currently running some really nifty tires I yanked off of an Electra Townie (Cheng Shin ) on my heavy, heavy bike. But you know I like to ride it more than I like to pick it up with one hand.
If I want to do a Lance-ride I have a lighter wheelset ready to go and take off the fenders. |
So is there some place where you can find extra-heavy tires? How bout extra-thick tubes that are extra thick all around (not just on the outer part)?
Sometime back, I was wearing knee pads while I unicycled, and they kept slipping down and I thought "Extra long suspenders would fix that." That's the Fredliest thought I ever had. |
My Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires (25 c, but they're really more like 28's) are heavy as can be, especially with the heavy duty tubes inside 'em. They make up for the weight gain by being bulletproof - not one flat in over 2000 miles, and I only need to air them up about once per week (unlike the race bike with latex tubes that have to be aired up every time I ride).
