New bike help

I looking to buy a new bike. I am currently riding an 1980's Nishiki road bike and would like to upgrade my ride.
I am having trouble deciding on what type of bike to buy, road or hybrid cross.
I like to ride 8-10 miles a day, in city and then on weekends, go on longer rides of 30-60 miles. I live in Seattle, and there are a lot of hills.
I would like a triple crank, and decent components.
Anu help would be great.
Thanks
Mark

If you are not planning on doing any racing look at the touring bikes for comfort and speed.

When you say hybrid cross, do you mean a hybrid bike, or a cyclo-cross one. CX bikes are thouroughbred, built for racing off-road, but are excellent as general purpose bikes.
A CX, touring , or light-touring bike would all do the job. The performance differences are mainly due to tyre choice.

I'd get a road bike with no less than 105 level components. The cyclocross idea seems like a good idea if you route takes you over some rough roads or even unpaved roads. Cyclocross bikes are more rugged and a good choice for a MIX of conditions.

My favorite is a Jake the Snake from Kona. However, there are many available now. Check out Redline, LeMond, K2 and Iron Horse to name just a few.

If I can only own one bike, it'll be a CX bike.

On the hybrid, I was looking at the Fuji Royale. On the road bikes, I have looked at the Giant ocr1, Jamis Ventura and The Fuji Roubaix.
I don't plan on racing. Would like to keep the price under $1000.00
I am big guy, 6.2 235.
There are plenty of sales going on in my area, but most of the bikes on sale are not in my size. I was ready to buy the Roubaix, but no go on my size.
