Hi, I'm new to the forum and I had a question on the pricing of a bike.

I'm mainly looking at the pricing because he mentioned a 60 cm bike which I think would fit me more since I'm 6'0, 155 lbs. Unless you guys think 57cm is okay? I don't know. Either way, is his pricing reasonable? for the 60 Cm he said ... 150$. I think it was called a Vortex or something? I dont know, sorry. But the 1st 2 bikes and mainly to see if they're reasonable prices. Thanks in advance.

ah thanks Tolfan, do you think I should wait on buying this bike and look for a cheaper one? Or offer him 100 dollars for the white 57cm he's asking 175 for?

wow yeah, i'm more in the san jose area though, do you know any shops here? i dont have much money is the problem, i think 200 and below is good for me, think i can find one for that?

and should i try a mountain bike maybe? i'm trying to commute from east san jose to cupertino, that's about a 20 mile ride or so.

The Nishiki is the better of the two, But most bike shops won't stock 27" tires, They have to be ordered. (bikenashbar.com has them cheap via mail order) Unless you can do your own work you are at the mercy of your local bike shop where the bike is likely going to be older than the mechanics. $150? I have seen worse sold for more. I'm not in SF so I don't know values there, Here in NY I would pay no more than $100

Mountain bikes are okay, they're reliable and the big tires make the ride a bit more comfy over rough terrain, but they also weigh more and if you use the stock knobbies you'll be cursing yourself out for not getting slicks sooner.

I haven't tried a road bike, but everyday I see reasons why they're better commuters.

yeah, that probably explains the prices, blarg. it's sad how 200 won't get you very far for a bike, but considering gas prices, maybe that's why they're so expensive! thx shadow.

Well, how far are you commuting? I got myself a $110 199x mountain bike, it's pretty good, I push about 3.5miles each way on a commute. The knobbies are okay, but I just recently switched out to slicks. I haven't tried commuting with the slicks yet.

er, i'd be commuting 20 miles about, one way. hm?

I'd stick with road bikes.

Here is an old 62 cm 12 spd fuji for $75. It will be more compatible with current tires and componets than the 70's era Nishiki and Raliegh. I would offer $50

Rusty spokes?stainless steel doesn't rust,sounds like one of those old one piece crank bikes.If it is I bought one of those for $20.00 years ago at the flea market.
