Helmet and lock advice

Hello folks,

So I'm just getting into biking these days and I'm looking into buying a good helmet and lock. Actually, I already bought both, and I wanted to make sure that it was a good decision.

The helmet I got:

Iron Man Pro Bicycle Helmet -

The lock I got:

Masterlock Ultra Protector 6 Bike Lock -
http://www.canadiantire.ca/browse/pr...08474396672224

What do you think? Can I do better?

Ian

Something seems to be broken in the URL for the lock you have posted. Maybe try to make a tiny url for it instead.

There's a lot of variables involved in picking a lock. How valuable is your bike? Will you be leaving it in a high crime or vulnerable area (e.g. campus setting). Will you tend to leave a heavy lock at home?

If security is important, go with a lock that has been through some type of peer review or certification process. Search the forum for information about the lock you are thinking of.

You might take a look at Sheldon Brown's page on locking strategies:

You can do much better on the lock. Cable locks offer very little theft protection; they can be cut with a small hand tool in a matter of seconds. Look for a U-lock or chain if you want good security for your bike.

Also, search the forums for lock threads, there are many which explain the differences in different locks.

What kind of drivetrain does sheldon have on that bike?

There's a bunch of detail on the link directly below the image.

go for the best lock you can afford. If it's real heavy you can always leave it locked to your parking spot.
