Mini U locks?
 

I'm trying to decide between a Kryptonite evolution mini and a same size OnGuard lock.

The Evolution Mini is 70$ and the OnGuard is $50. Here is the onguard lock http://www.onguardlock.com/lockviewe...ock&model=5008

Which one is stronger?

Which one should I get?

I got an Evolution Mini on Amazon for $45. It's a great lock, but small. Turns out it didn't fit easily around the pole that I lock my bike to at work, so I had to get a full-sized U-lock.

Would a mini u fit on most places?

I have two of the Evolution locks - one mini, one regular (?) size. I've found that I can't count on the mini to fit around whatever I'm locking my bike to; maybe 50% success rate over a large number of locations.

Unless I'm traveling light in familiar territory (e.g. to the locked bike cage at work), I just carry both locks. I use one to lock the frame and front wheel to an immovable object, and the other to lock the rear wheel to the bike. If the mini works in the former role, I prefer it since I feel its smaller size would make it harder to jack open.

I have had good luck with both brands. The biggest reason I'd go with the Kryptonite is because the $20 gets you a Sold Secure Silver guarentee, which means that model has gone through testing and is rated as resistant to hand tools for a certain amount. In reality, both locks will get you adequate protection.

As previous posters state, make sure a mini U lock can lock your bike up where you are putting it. In some locations, a mini-U doesn't have the space. Also, consider locking wheel and seat skewers (pitlocks are great, pinheads decent, even the Hublox from Delta Cycle or the Allen skewers from Nashbar or the ones with a standard key will help stop a would be thief from stealing your wheels.)

Personally, I'd go for a either a New York Lock STD, or an OnGuard Brute STD. It is more weight, but you have more locking possibilities including perhaps removing the front wheel and locking that with the rear.
