Forces at work to stop my cycling

I am getting pretty angry..Today is a beautiful day. I need a ride..Christmas eating and all...
Started Day after last ride with no explanation I began to feel a large inflamed spot in the lower left back...Enough pain, I actually went to the doctor. He ruled out kidney stones. Gave me Vicodin and muslce relaxers. Vicodin everything feels good. Said to do some exercises. For most part it has hurt enough- have not wanted to do the exercises.MOstly lifting back, that kind of thing.
On days like today I really want to get out. He said the back needs exercises. Hurts more today than yesterday. Yesteday party eating and drinking. Alcohol? Wine? No vicodin, so far today.
I really want to get out. Did not discuss my biking with the doctor, when I was there. Anyone expereince lower back pain with biking? Just below the left kidney..Not sure biking was related to its cause. Will it just go away.?

Nope, I have them also, and the worst pain known to man is Trigeminal Neuralgia

i missed a beautiful day of riding..The lower back pain today is enough that vicodin does not cut through it entirely.
Another bike friend says he gets back pain..He had the problem prior to biking. Just comes on him after feeling something being pulled....Says with rest it goes away. About three days since I started to feel it and with each day it gets worse. To see my doctor again, tomorrow... Said ultra sound is necessary to diagnose kidney stones...
Kidney stones, does not the problem eventually shift to the uninary area...? I put myself over my trainer to see how it would feel..That lasted for about one minute. Hope this is reallly temporary..Think cold packs helps the most.

If its stones, your dieing right now, worst then having a baby. When it goes from kidney to blader is when you have the pain, only when its moving through that very small tube the urine goes through.I would tell you to lay as much as you can on the floor with a heating pad.

Skor.. I feel it the most when I move my back into ceratin positions...When I am still and not in a painful position I do not feel it..Stones can be felt at all times regardless of how you position your back? The pain does not seem to be traveling south...

Hi,
that the cold pack helps suggest it's a muscle problem. I keep several cold packs in the freezer. They help. Ask your Doc before you try this, but this is what worked on my back pain. I would do a long soak in a hot tub. When I couldn't get to a hot tub; I would lie in a tub with my feet up, and the water as high and hot as I could take it. After the soak, I would do really gentle stretching, at first it would be more like gentle swaying. Speaking of stretching, there is a book called Stretching by Andersen. Might help.

You only know you got stones when they travel.

One of the characteristics of kidney stones is that you simply can NOT stay still. You pace and pace and move and move.

Kidney stones can be diagnosed through the use of X-Rays - I have never had an ultrasound to diagnose, and I have passed at least 10 over the years.

The pain is their moving through the ureter. You get the pain no matter what position you get into. If changing position or being still stops the pain, very unlikely to be kidney stones.

Drink, drink, drink lots of fluids (no caffeine in any way) to get them to pass.

The danger is that they will block and damage the kidney. Friend of mine lost 85% of one kidney function due to blockage.

I find that a hot bath helps, at least it makes me feel better to soak.

Dye and x-ray is what they do.

I had one last year. Got stuck at the final turn into my bladder. I had cat scans, x-rays with dye, and ultrasound to find/size/track my stone. Finally after three months of suffering I begged my urologist to take it out. I had to have surgery to remove my stone. Nothing in the world has ever made me pass out from pain, but that first pee after the surgery...wow. Thank God for the large orderly standing there to catch me.

Mine was stuck about 2 inches from where the pee comes out.A dumb ass shoves it back up and i have scare tissue build up.Going pee is kinda like a straw on a facuet.

Think I am better today..Side hurts less. I was just disappointed because my mileage has been so terrible..Less than 4100 miles. Last couple days had hoped to get it up over 4300 and then got sick.. Less than half I did last year.
One day to go, no more rides this year. Dr. now thinks I had some kind of kidney infection. No rides until 04 it would seem...Anttiobiotics seems to be making the pain better.

Jean Beetham Smith 12-31-03 04:19 PM

CZ I hope you are feeling better. I know it has been a really tough year for you with your shoulder surgery and now this, but keep in mind, even with all that, you probably rode as much or more than a 1/3 of the members of this forum. That really is not shabby, OK it's not LA league, but it is still good. Keep you chin up and get well.

cyclezealot 12-31-03 06:44 PM

Thanks..Jean..Just did my last ride in the remaining moments of sunlight for 2003. Nice day here today.Cool,60ish, but sunny..Was nice crisp ride. Did 15 miles to go to the second closest post office. Slept after PM shift or would have done a lot more. Think likely kidney infection is about gone... Without Kidney infection had hoped to do 4,410 miles to do one half of last years miles.Silly goal setting heah?
So miles for year was 4,033 as opposed to last years 8,819.
To try and end my supersition over my older road bike, today it was used on the road( as opposed to just the trainer) for the first time since April 25. Silly to blame the bike. wore the same jersey and went over the spot of the freak accident.
Next year hope to get to 9,000 miles and again cross Nevada. Good riding to all for 2004. \
Will ride to the coast tomorrow to greet the sun on the beach; to get in a 50 miler for the years' first days ride.
