how do you keep your face warm?
We're experiencing our coldest weather of the year right now. I've ridden a couple times with the temp in the lower 30's but today I took off into a 15 MPH headwind and the temp was 24 degrees. I wear a lycra head covering, but it does not cover my entire face. My nose felt like it was frozen solid by the time I got back, but everything else was good. What do you wear to keep your face warm?

Not that this helps to much but, i was at the Jacob Javits Motorcycle show over the weekend and some of the vendors had a variety of about 20 different options for face coverage, some of them were really nice.

Wait till it goes numb, then I can't feel a thing, it's great.

Ditto the balaclava, probably get one for 10 bucks at a local sporting goods shop, can be worn over the whole head and the lower part raised over mouth and nose (or just mouth) or kept down as needed. Can also be worn as only a hat, or as a neck warmer, very versatile. Also get a pair of cheap shop safety glasses and wear, makes a big difference for the eyes and upper head region.

I wear a 6 IN 1 that I purchased from Nashbar. Great neck warmer that can be pulled up over your face when it gets cold. I top it off with a wool hat under my helmet.

It never gets cold enough to bother me,but my toes and fingers do.

Balaclava - yes, that's what I use now. It worls great for everything but my nose. I never noticed that before yesterday but maybe I should just tough it out until it gets numb. Yesterday it got so cold it felt like if I touched it, it would shatter like an ice cube hehe.

A. Your neck B. Your neck, head and chin C. Your neck,head,chin and mouth D. Your neck,head, chin, mouth and nose It is very flexible. I seldom cover my nose just because I don't find it comfortable. However if you get into nasty enough conditions you have no choice. ONe thing that I find useful is pulling the balaclava just to the top edge of my upper lip. Then when I breath out warm air it is deflected to my nose. This works in all but the worst windchills. (single digit and below) |
Stop shaving. Over the winter holiday I stopped shaving for a couple of weeks and I really noticed the difference on my early morning rides. I was looking a little too Talibanish for work so I trimmed it into a goatee and it still helps.

One of my old methods was to tie a bandana around my face. It covered my nose, looked cool, and would ice up with my breath. I used it when I was down hill skiing here in Minnesota. The bandana would unfreeze on the way down; be a sopping mess, then on the chair lift it would freeze. Had to be careful not to take it down on the chair lift cause it would freeze all crinkled and wouldn't work. It was also when I really needed the protection from the wind.
I fashioned a "Dickie" out of an old T-shirt. You cut the arm and sholder off an old T-shirt, pull it over your head, and it works great, just like a turtle neck only better. It is what I use now along with a blabkava. keeps my face toasty. |
You might find that covering your nose fogs the goggles. Also I never shave it does keep your chin warm but not the face.

I've only found that my goggles fog if I keep my nose covered while I am stopped, so at a red light or other long stop I just uncover my nose then cover up again. With temps down to 32f though I seldom need to cover my nose, except for maybe when I start out my ride, of course I am not going as far as some of you all.
