I don't carry a gun and have never even thought about it.

I hope you never have to think about it, either.

That's true, I don't know where I'm going with this but a stat I remember is that women attempt suicide 3 times as often as men, but men are 3 times as successful as women when they do attempt it, just something I found interesting.
I will probably regret saying this but I just couldn't resist.

When women aren't as successful in the workplace they blame it on the management. What do they blame this on.

Actually the suicide is all about being rescued. These peolple beg to be rescued. That is why they do it, in the first place. Since more women survive the attempt, it makes them more successful, not otherwise.

Women use mostly, if I remember the statistics correctly, the overdosing of medicine.

It is not related just to some jerks and freaks. The suicide is one of the leading causes of death. Having loaded and oiled gun around makes it very easy. Especially since the real suicidal urge may last only several minutes, and then may be gone.

In a way, it is even worse than homicide (if something could be worse), because it traumatizes the spouse, parents, children very seriously. So add to those 30000 per year about 100000 relatives and spouses, and we can see that this is not a negligent problem. And at least in some cases the easily accessible gun is the part of it.

My police freinds (not chiefs but beat cops) would prefer the citizens to be less armed seeing most gun deaths are not your average "criminal" type but from heat of the moment anger. They are trained to do what they do and do not want our help.

According to most Police Unions, FOP, and other law enforcement organization your friends are certainly in the minority and seem to have a skewed view of the "average criminal".

I do agree they do not want our untrained help, but many do agree in CCW as a method of deterrence.

Quote from Digger"Crime surely would drop and it would be a safer community if we all had guns!

Why that's brilliant! "

The CDC (Center for disease control) which was antigun studied the effect of gun control laws in the US and could not prove that those laws reduced crime at all. In fact, just the opposite. Actually, many states (35) now have Concealed Carry laws and statistics have shown that there is a correlation between allowing carry laws and less crime. Gee, I guess it is brilliant. In crime areas, criminals don't go into houses or attack people where they know their is a chance of getting shot. Duuuuh
So how much did Canada spend to take away and register all those guns that aren't hurting anybody after all???? Why that's just brilliant isn't it??!!!!!

Reading these posts remind me of a quote. But first, some trivial but relative background on me. Vietnam Vet, combat experienced, 1 official CK, several probables. Seen what guns can do to those who don't have any (both the good guys and bad guys).
I read this quote some time back, describing a group of 100 men involved in war.

"Out of every 100 men,
10 should not be here,
80 are nothing but targets,
9 are the real fighters,
and we are lucky to have them,
for they the battle make."
"Ah, but the ONE,
ONE of them is a WARRIOR,
and he will bring the others back."

This applies to the normal combat team (in my humble experience) but wait, this was written long ago.

by Heraclitus in 500 BC.

What's that got to do with this post? well- my experience says it still applies. Most folks I've seen injured were from accidents, friendly fire , etc.
Our US culture is about the involvement of weapons. Good guys vs bad guys. Canada has a culture of non-violence regarding guns. Cultures are very hard to change. Odd thing is, in the US, and I am sure Canada must have this, there are folks out there who will hurt you just for the enjoyment of seeing the look of surprise on your face. Generally, Canada just chooses by both parties, good and evil, to not use guns. US citizens on the other hand understand the severe advantage a criminal has over you if you don't have a gun. Criminals (in US) have an admitted trait to study their intended victim to determine if they are armed (only a 10% probability the intended vicitims are proficient in their use) . Thus I choose to carry and keep skilled in the practice of weapontry. Yes, even at times on a bike. On the other hand, the vast majority of folks who carry a gun can be very dangerous to themselves and others i.e the 10 & 80.
Obviuosly not an easy choice for some.
But- Its your choice, our founding fathers gave that right to each of us, and until we change the laws, or move and/or enter non US soil, thats the fact of life. Its your choice and one must take responsibility & consquences of danger if he chooses to arm himself. On the other hand if he chooses not to, he must also understand the consquences (and odds) of avoiding tradegy and being a victim of extreme & often grave atrocities however rare they be.

Sleep tight and good biking.

Hm, I've never thought of that as important for commuting cycling in rush hour traffic. Maybe I should carry a gun, that way I could pelt the occasional obnoxious honking motorist with a few rounds.

Seriously, I'd never ride where I thought I needed to carry a gun for protection.

after reading this thread, im more afraid of the armed here than i am of anything else on the road. i live in "the heart of texas", btw :)

edit: a few months ago i used to carry around a really nifty little Kershaw Chive knife (w/ legal switchblade-like auto-open action)... it was more for utility than anything... i carried it mostly for sh*t and giggles, tho.

one night i got involved in a drunken conflict. i remembered about my knife but did not at all consider pulling it out. if i had, the outcome wouldve been bad.. .for either, or maybe both, of us.... none of which would have been favorable. im glad i had restraint. im more glad that he did not have a knife... but im most glad that he did not have a gun...

"In 2000, 52% of homicides were committed with handguns, 14% with other guns, 14% with knives, 5% with blunt objects, and 15% with other weapons"

Regardless, more people die as a result of smoking. Maybe we should arm our women and children with Marlboro Lights for self-defense? :)

No the reason the gun is/was called the equalizer is because it doesn't let us weight lifters take over the world. It gives women and older or weaker folks a chance.

What you had was good judgement which is what anyone who carries a firearm must have.

In any event, a weapon is not something you draw out in a drunken brawl or a fair fight just to get an upper hand. A weapon is solely for the purpose of defending your life when confronted with equal or superior force. If you are confronted by someone who has the ability and shows intent to kill or cripple you then that is the only time the consideration of deadly force should come into play. Many of us might joke about guns but the act of drawing on someone is a seriuos matter. Only to be considered if in fear of your life or the life of someone close to you.

An old phrase puts it into perspective..."I would rather be judged by twelve for acting in self defense than be carried by 6 on my way to the grave"

redfooj 02-15-04 07:39 PM

sam, thanks for your input. the problem isn't placed completely on guns, but on the fact that other owners arent as similarly wise-minded... which, i guess, is another problem entirely :D

Cops in my area think law abiding citizens have the right to bear arms. Because #1 its our 2nd Amendment, 2 it helps them out when they are 30min-60min away and cant respond. Damn I hate antis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Go ahead use your cell phones. See how well they protect you when some nut case wants to bash your brain in and does so. Oh I forgot we all wear helmets.
