Bikes: Specialized Tarmac Expert, 2002 TREK 520, Schwinn Mesa WINTER BIKE, Huffy Rock Creek 29er, 1970s-era Ross ten speed. All my bikes are highly modified(except the Tarmac) yet functional, and generally look beat to ****. .

What is this? Achilles injury?
About six months ago, I started jogging a couple of times a week. Right off the bat, the backside of my left calf got real sore, and never really seemed to recover. It didn't really seem to affect anything, so I continued running and riding. I stretch it regularly.
Last month I was on a short, albeit hilly, bike tour. I was doing a lot of climbing and I felt the calf straining, but again, it didn't really give me any problems so I just kept on with it. When I got back from the trip, I went for a jog after a couple of days rest. The next day the calf swelled up and got very tight and painful. I took it easy for a little while, iced it up daily, and laid off the running. It got better, but not completely.
I'm currently on a long bike tour and the calf is barely hanging in there. It swells up a little sometimes in the evenings, and sometimes I feel it straining during the day while riding. It seems to be taking a long time to heal.
I've never had this sort of injury before. Are the Achilles tendons inflamed? Does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing? Any advice?
Thanks.

take it easy, i.e., stop riding if possible
see a physiotherapist a.s.a.p.
Try changing to something like powercranks which put less stress on one part of your pedal stroke and have been used successfully as a rehab tool for pro athletes from cycling, triathlon, track and field, football, soccer, etc.

If you HAVE to keep riding try spinning at 100+ rpm all the time - this is layman advice so may not work/may make the situation worse
