Here is a serious question. I just got back into cycling after quite a few years. I used to ride road bikes and had my share including a tandem. Most of my biking friends decided that platforms didn’t work for them so we started with toe clips and then some started to go clipless. I held out for a long time because I didn’t care for the shoes. Once I got the shoes our trips changed. We used to get together and ride to long beach and maybe spend the day walking around seaport village or San Diego’s old town. The old bike shoes simply didn’t allow for much walking.

Now that I am back into cycling I have been riding with platforms because I also like to walk around when I get to some of the places I ride to. My question is do the new clipless bike shoes make reasonable walking shoes? I think I could get used to clipping in again but my feet simply can’t take hiking in uncomfortable walking shoes.

I plan on getting a rack bag soon and it will be big enough to carry an extra pair of shoes but before I change pedals it would be nice to know if they make a shoe your could walk a mile or two in.

When I was clipless a few years ago I had a pair of biking shoes that looked like a low-cut hiking shoe. The bike store saleman said they can be used for walking around if you're off your bike, but they were uncomfortable to walk around in, even though they looked comortable.

They were probably mountain bike shoes, that had some tread around the cleat so you didn't clatter and skid when you walked, so not as hard to walk in as road shoes - but still uncomfortable because they point uphill. They should add a little tread to the heel to compensate.

I have clipless on my regular commuter with a mild MTB shoe and recessed cleats that are walkable. I have clips on my for fun or when I feel faster classic Schwinn.

It's the only way roll. Clipless that is.

As some would say; BOF!

I like to commute with platforms and whatever shoes I wear, but on recreational rides, I wear clipless...

Depends on which foot you're talking about.

One footed clipless? Eek!

Yep! My left foot is clipped into the pedal, and my right foot in on a platform. It's VERY comfortable and works well.

I don't think I could handle that. My right foot is splayed enough that riding a platform is a pain. I need some sort of retention. The exception being during winter when I would rather deal with that issue and have the ability to put my feet down as fast as possible when I start to loose traction.

See ... I have crashed going uphill because I've been going so slowly I didn't have time to unclip. Crashing reduced my already low confidence level in my climbing ability, and so I started walking up everything in sight, even when I probably could have cycled up. I just didn't want to risk crashing again.

When I switched to the setup I use now, my confidence level increased, and I'm cycling up everything in sight!! :D I know that if it happens that the hill becomes too steep for me, I can easily put a foot down. But I rarely come across hills that are too steep for me anymore. :) :)

Another benefit of the setup I use is that I can negotiate the traffic in cities better ... especially European cities which tend to be very congested.

As long as it works for you that is all that matters. :)

I've been spending quite a bit of time in the Rockies lately. Climbing is addictive. The downhills more so. Weeeeeee!

Machka proves that it doesn't matter what others do or don't use, it's what works best for YOU. I have bikes with platforms, toe clips and clipless. They all serve their purpose.
