HELP! My fingers are numb!

Left hand, last two fingers are numb. Been this way for days. Feeling not coming back. What have I done! Not entire finger, and not totally numb, but feeling it tips of fingers at about 10%. This sucks since I also play guitar. I think a trip to the Dr. is going to be in order.

I did 135 miles last week at the beach on my bike. Now I am wondering if I have done perm. Damage.

guitar playing damage

I am in a similar situation with numb fingers and playing guitar. I am right handed so it also has caused problems with my chord hand. Mine has been like this since mid April. My compensation has been to look more often to where my index finger as playing various shaped barr chords. Besides that, I just make a joyful noise with our worship band.

I asked an orthopedic surgeon and all he said was that I might have compressed the ulnar nerve that leads down the outside but on the palm side of the hand. He told me that if my playing get worse to hang up the guitar and peddle harder.............

Could it possibly have something to do with how/where you're holding your bars?

I don't know. Last week I rode the Mtb. all week at the beach. But I get the same type of numbness from the Road Bike and I hold it near the hoods. Funny it is only the left hand. My wife suggested I remove the wedding ring for a week while riding and see if that helps. There are only two differences between the right and left hand.

A. The wedding ring

B. Involved in an accident maybe 20 years ago and chipped a bone in the wrist. That hasn't caused any other issues, but who knows.

You've pinched a nerve, either in your neck or in your wrist. An orthopedist or osteopath should be able to sort you out - a bit of physiotherapy should set you right. My mother has arthritis in her neck that causes the same problem. She has a set of stretches she does to take the pressure off the nerve.

I'd suggest a chiropractor, but I get the impression they are not nearly as well regulated in the US as in Canada . I trust my chiropractor with everything, but then, he had to pass more exams than my GP did...

When riding bicycles or playing guitar, you should keep the wrist as straignt as possible. Maybe move your brake levers and thumb shifters around the bar to where you have to extend slightly to stop or change gears. This helps keep the wrist extended.
With guitar or bass, position the neck and body of the instrument where your chord hand reaches the top of neck (lower E side) with wrist straight and string picking hand should also have the wrist straight. An hour of daily practice with bent wrists can cause serious carpal tunnel.

A. Will cause paralysis in men over time.
