Bent frame
 

Wierd thing happened on my tri-bike. Coming to a light I shift down and pedal, light turns green so I start pedaling and shifting rings when all of a sudden I'm heading to a screeching halt. It appears the rear derailleur rolled too far and jammed in the spokes. The hanger and derailleur are a mess and worst of all, it slightly bent the hanger piece (it slips me what that is called but part of the stay) slightly out. I need to bend this back but don't want to completely render the frame useless. It's aluminum of course. Didn't even bother the spokes!
Any suggestions? Trek said they would give me a partial allowance for a new bike but I can't afford another 2 grand for a bike.

Most road bike have replaceable deraileur hangers, doesn't yours come off? Or did the bend go further up the stays???

I think the deraileur hanger is part of the right hand dropout.

I think only cheap discount bikes have a replaceable deraileur hanger, Rogue leader.

Since the bike is aluminum, it might not be possible to straighten the deraileur hanger. It might straighten, or it might break off.

You could get a deraileur hanger off a cheap bike, and secure it with the axle nut, just like a cheap mass merchandise bike. (I'm holding my hand over my eyes...).

If that doesn't suit you, you could make a fixed gear track bike of it.

on which they show repair of some pretty severe damage. I don't know how practical, how common, or how costly this kind of work is.

I really can't say without looking at the bike, but there are at least two possibilities.

1. Does your bike have a replaceable derailleur hanger. Most bikes with aluminum or carbon frames do. If that's the case, go to derailleur hangers dot com and try to find one that matches. Buy 2 so you won't have to wait for shipping the next time this happens.

2. Can you ride the bike the way that it is? I'm guessing not. If that's the case, what do you have to lose? The best way to tweak a derailleur hanger back into place is with a Park or similar gauge tool. Horror stories not-with-standing, I think that most hangers have one bend back in them. If it was my bike I'd try it. Matter of fact, when it was my bike I've done it.

Thanks everyone. This is a trek hilo, not a cheap bike but not a "expensive" tri-bike either. It has a replaceable hanger but it trashed that +. I've heard I can heat it and bend it back with good results. That would also require some paint.

Anyone bend an AL bike hanger/drop back into place and have good shifting results? Argh I don't need to shell out a bunch of cash for a new frame right now.
