Brooks saddles- stamp on frame?

Hi all, if you only want to read the question skip the next few lines!!
It all started earlier this year when the rail of my Selle San Marco Concor Supercorsa "Profil" broke
This saddle and I had been together since the 1980's - you know the feeling??
So I purchased the new Concor- just loved that kick in the tail!! But... they aren't the same shape- to my bum anyway. And the last few months haven't been a happy union. We have ridden about 2000 km together and one of us isn't happy...me.
So I thought long and hard for a new saddle to buy, and was strongly influenced by my track bike's Brooks saddle. This saddle was my grandfathers from the 1930's. It is a 'B17 sprint' , but because of laid back seat angles back then I can't fit it to my road bike now- this bike has a very upright, criterium angled, seat tube. The B17 will not go back far enough for me.
So I contacted my local frame builder/ bike collector/ bike junk owner etc etc and asked if he had any old Brooks saddles to look at/ try. I was prepared to buy a new one- $180 (in aussie), but he had a second hand one that wasn't broken in.
So I bought it. After 3 rides, (100km) the Brooks Competition and I are getting along beautifully- no sign of soreness at all!!
Which brings me to my question- under the saddle the frame has 'Made in England' and below that it is stamped ' A 78'.

Could someone please tell me what the 'A 78' stands for?

PS- the B17 Sprint didn't take much breaking in to my shape- maybe the old guy and I were similar in butt shape

After reading your post, I looked at three Brooks saddles on the bikes I happened to have in my basement. I couldn't find any stamping on the frame. Or did I miss it? Where is your stamp exactly?

I heard somewhere that Brooks saddles have the dates stamped on the frame. Maybe yours is August or April '78?

I have a total of 5 Brooks saddles - 2 B-17's, a B-17 Competition, a Professional and a B-15. I could have had a Champion (coil springs!) but I slept through the closing of an ebay auction. It sold to some lucky guy for $15.50 shipped. Uggh.

Thanks Oscar,
the 'Made in England' is right in the middle of the very back of the frame (underneath the Brooks metal brand name, on the leather) then the 'A 78' is stamped right under that (towards the middle of the saddle or the seatpost clamp)
-hope that all makes sense.
The old B17 that I have doesn't have any markings either.
regards, sillystorm

Ps I bought this saddle for $60 (aussie), so it is a great buy!

I gotta check more saddles!

Two of my saddles were off of dumpster saves! Cost: $0 (U.S.). One was given to me by a friend. Cost: $0 (U.S.). Well, I had him over for dinner tonite, but I'm still ahead on the deal.
