Is their a race I can participate in?

Not for me, but for my girlfriend.

She has a Motobecane Messenger which is a single speed road bike. Just like her, I've never participated in any races, though, my first cyclocross race will be in a few weeks. Unfortunately, her bike wouldn't work well for cyclocross.

With that being said.. she's somewhat competitive and she was asking me the other day if their was some type of race or something she could participate in. Any suggestions?

If it helps, I'm located in Northern California.

There are all sorts of races, although that may be the wrong bike for a lot of them. I've read of the fixed-gear people having alley cat races. Read the article on wikopedia for more info there. There are regular road races and criteriums, and anyone can buy their license and start in there- check the Road Cycling and Road Cycling Racing forums for more info. Some of the charity rides are theoretically races, although they are not sanctioned by the racing people, and 90% of the participants aren't racing anybody. If you have a velodrome near you, that's another racing option, particularly with a fixed gear. Triathlons seem to be popular if you can swim and run. There are time trial events, have one coming up here in Texas in a couple of weeks, and it's open to anyone. And, like you say, the cyclocross.

The rat race is my favorite although I can't seem to stop from being dropped out the back.

There's an alleycat in 20 minutes in Oakland. Good luck.
