200 miles in 24 hours isn't all that difficult ... that's a pretty relaxed pace.

My wife and I relax with 40-80 mile rides on the weekends.
Our grocery store is 5 miles away...and I likes me food!

I'm thinking we can move this thread over to the LD forum after it runs its course here...might be fun.

Wow! Thanks for all the responses folks. I only tracked your responses for a few hours before writing my article.
Just a little back-story: I write an on-going column for the Central Indiana Bicycling Association called "The Skinny on Cycling." Because cycling has been a big part of how I lost 100 pounds, I generally write about some blend of cycling, healthy living and weight loss. It is written specifically for Hoosier cyclists, so please forgive the local references and my lack of precision in recalling TDF factoids! This article will be published in the August edition.
So, if you'd like to read the article that was spawned by this question, click here:

Thanks again!

2. 165 Miles
3. What's reasonable? For a daily commute probably no more than 20 miles each way... for a tour, 100 miles a day isn't bad.
4. Uh, how many hours in a day? If maintaining 20MPH and going for 24 hours, then 480 miles is bordering on INSANE.

1. Yes
2. Not sure if it was the longest I ever did, but the longest in recent years was 115 miles carrying full camping gear (in the middle of a long 4200+ mile tour).
3. 100 miles
4. 300 miles

A few hours is a short tracking time on these forums ... you've got to give questions like this a week or two for everyone to respond. Some of us go 12 or 24 or more hours between visiting the forum.

I know, but I was on a deadline. Also, I was amazed that within about three hours I had several responses and as I look back over the subsequent responses, I didn't see anything that would have changed the article substantially. ( I suppose I get a C- for methodology, but hopefully I'll get a B+ for wit! )

Hi folks. I'm doing a little research for an article I'm about to write for our local cycling newsletter. If you don't mind, please answer these quick questions:
1. Do you ride a bike? (I'm assuming almost everyone here does.)
2. What's the longest distance you've ever ridden in a single day? (In mi or km)
3. What do you consider a reasonable distance for a single day's ride? (Again, mi or km)
4. What do you consider an INSANE, but still humanly possible distance for a single day ride? (mi or km)
Thanks in advance.
