Definition of INSANITY
Hi folks. I'm doing a little research for an article I'm about to write for our local cycling newsletter. If you don't mind, please answer these quick questions:
1. Do you ride a bike? (I'm assuming almost everyone here does.) 2. What's the longest distance you've ever ridden in a single day? (In mi or km) 3. What do you consider a reasonable distance for a single day's ride? (Again, mi or km) 4. What do you consider an INSANE, but still humanly possible distance for a single day ride? (mi or km) Thanks in advance. |
1. Yes.
2. 102.25 Miles. 3. 40 Miles. 4. 103 Miles |

1. Yes, I ride a bike daily
2. 118 miles is the farthest I've ridden in a single day 3. 30-35 miles is a reasonable recreational ride. 20-25 miles is a reasonable round trip commute. 4. Riding 100 miles is like running a marathon, more is just nuts. |
Yes.
78 50 (that's pretty much an average day on a bike tour leaving time to enjoy dinner and a "short" night out) ~400 the annual Race Across AMerica. |
1. Yes (3-4 days per week)
2. 113 miles (over 105 a half dozen times) 3. 50 miles (typical Saturday) 4. 207 miles (the LoToJa race) My butt just can't handle 11 hours straight on a bicycle seat! |
1. Yes, almost daily
2. 140 miles over 30 years ago...recently about 50 miles 3. 40-60 miles 4. 200 miles if you are trying to outrun something like a hurricane. Aaron:) |
1. Yes, but not during the winter.
2. 128 miles (200 kilometers) 3. Anything up to 100 miles is fun. 4. I can't fathom doing anything over 150 miles... I'd be ready to shoot myself after sitting on a bike for that long |
1. Yes
2. 105 miles 3. 62 miles 4. 200 miles |
1. Yes.
2. 135 miles. 3. 60-75 miles. 4. 150 miles. |
1. Yes.
2. not quite 200 Miles. 3. up to 100 Miles. 4. 250 Miles -- this is without using lights :) It really depends on your conditioning. I haven't done 100 miles recently, but I think it is reasonable for many, many cyclists. The time I rode almost 200 miles, I was riding my bike from Blacksburg to Richmond Virginia. I wasn't really liking the road I chose and some guys offered me a ride. Since I was riding in the State road championship in 2 days, I thought it might be a good idea to cut the ride short. I certainly could have made it, there was plenty of hours of daylight left. I don't think it affected my race at all, although the next day I did feel a little down. I just looked up some results from a 24 hour ride. The highest number of miles I saw was 475. A guy that lives near me did 420+ miles. Sounds amusing, but I don't think I'll be doing that this year. |
1. Yes
2. 122 miles 3. 50 miles 4. 200.5 miles |

1) yes
2) 130km - hah, and i did it today! got a century coming up on the 7th :P 3) 40km - this is enough where you get the ride in after an hour, and can still do things for the rest of the day :). this would be the "daily" ride. otherwise, if you're out to plan a day of biking i'd say 'bout 80km. after 80 you start getting bored. 4) 300ish km |
1. Yes
2. 112 miles 3. 80 miles 4. 250 miles |
1. Yes
2. 132 miles 3. 40 4. anything an inch more than 132 miles |
1 Never.....well ok i do.
2. 129mi(got lost on a 100) 3. 50 or 60. 4. for me about 200 would be do able if i would trane :P |
1. Yes
2. 80 miles 3. 90-110 miles 4. depends on the rider, for me, probably 200 miles give or take, I'd be a mess at the end of the day though. |

About 16 km (commuting both ways). 3. 16 km is fast becoming reasonable. :) 4. 30 km is the length of a ride I want to sign up for. I'll bet I could do it if it's flatter than my commute. |
I will add that 'humanly possible' is an awfully subjective thing. I know how far I can ride, and I know what I can probably do without bonking out myself. But I also know that other people are perfectly capable of riding much farther than I have ever ridden.

1. Yes
2. 92 miles 3. 40 miles 4. 225 miles (length of KATY trail) |

Yes
114 miles 30 - 60 miles, depending on the terrain; mountains are typically around 30-50 while flats are 50-60 206 miles (Lotoja 2008) |
1. Yes
2. 202 miles 3.57 miles 4. 1216.8 or so miles (by Michael Secrest, drafting behind a semi for 24 hours on an Arizona race track - he also did ~538+ miles in 24 hours non-drafting in an indoor velodrome) |
1. Yes :)
2. 100 km 3. 70 km is a reasonable day's ride for me (assuming I have the whole day free) - for commuting purposes, 30-40 km a day (round trip) 4. Insane but still humanly possible - 250km. Talk to me next year about this one :D |
