Unusual wear on Pearl Izumi shorts

I bought a pair of Pearl Izumi shorts (sorry cannot remember the style paid around $65 in early 2006).

I wear the shorts maybe a couple of times a week for 15-50 mile rides. I am getting strange wear spots on the front thighs with a few on the seat. It is almost like something is eating away at one of the layers. There aren't any real holes but the material has become partly opaque in these wear areas. I have Nashbar and Performance shorts that have lasted longer than these shorts. Has anyone experienced this kind of wear?

Yes I have the same problem with one pair of ultrasensor shorts. Two thin spots above the chamois in the back and also the top of the thigh. These are not "wear" areas.
