Vasectomy?
 

Just got my wires cut cut yesterday and was wondering how long before I can ride-a bike? Anyone with similar experiences? Thanks a lot!

I wasn't riding when I had my vasectomy, but what did your doctor say?

I assume you would ask the professional...

As a guess, I would say within about a week you could try, and if it hurts, you know it is too soon, :eek:

Edit: Other than pain, I know of no significant issues with riding, so your comfort level would be the main issue... as long as the doctor gives no other restrictions. It is not like you are going to hurt your fertility, or reverse the vasectomy. ;)

Seriously, I can't remember what I was told (or if I obeyed) when my wife had me fixed after our 20-year-old son was hatched.
Call the doc and ask for some guidance. Didn't they give you some written instructions? Probably didn't mention cycling.

Thats not a good idea... I had a hernia last year and felt fine after a week little did I know I almost tore it back open!

Sounds like a question for your doctor! I waited about 33 years.

This thread is fun, but in all good humour, there are some serious points: Beware of epididymitis! That can lay you up for a *very* log time :( It can also be a chronic, persistant condition, which is common with many testicular injuries (and presumably surgeries, given that a surgery is a form of controlled injury). Also, hopefully the surgeon got the "wire bias" correct -- you really *don't* want to have testicular tortion. Really, given the fact that you probably don't need any (more) children, infertility is no longer an issue -- you're essentially fixed. Just be *very* aware of any kind of persistant pain. Strangely enough, driving a car for long distances seems to exacerbate the (testicular) pain more than biking does...

I never even thought about that before. I don't remember it being more than a couple of days of minor soreness but I also don't remember how long before I rode my bike. Now the hemorrhoidectomy, that was another story... :eek:

This question is exactly why I am waiting until Dec or Jan to get one. Nice and cold here in the middle of PA then so not much riding going on for a couple of months anyway.

I had it done on a Friday afternoon and rode to work (easy 4 miles) on Monday. In retrospect, I should have played it up for more spousal sympathy.

I think that is the key... Start riding the bike as soon as you have milked all of the spousal sympathy out of it.

In discussing mine with other patients, the recovery rate can be significantly different for a few patients... although there are guidelines your doctor should have given you for activity. That plus listening to your body are good starting points.

For me, I was able to do most activities fairly soon as long as I kept things positioned carefully. But, in my case, I was still extra tender to minor impact for about a year.

I can't remember the exact time span when I was clipped but it was less than 7days before I was out riding

A hernia and a vasectomy are two different things.

Anyway, to the OP- if you haven't had it done, ask the doc when you do; if you have had it done already, just call 'em on the phone and ask.

Depends on your saddle. Doubt if my Moonsaddle would cause a problem if you wanted to ride the same day.

Aren't you worried that you'll miss out on some snow shoveling?

Still theres stitches and who knows what else. You have the best advice - ask the doc - not guys on a Bike forum..

Err...no my wife is pregnant (so no need to get the snip snip now) so I KNOW I wont miss out on any shoveling.

Hmm good point you bring up though...guess it is time to make sure the 7 yr old knows how to shovel. :D

I had mine done recently and the doctor told me that under no circumstances was I to consider riding within the first 7 days following the procedure. After that I was to wait until there was absolutely no pain or discomfort to prevent internal injury.

We discussed it quite a bit and the recovery time can vary a lot from person to person. I'm at roughly week #3 and I intend on testing the waters again tomorrow.

About a week for me. Ditto on the comment that driving the car was worse. And, those flexible icepacks made by Ace ("reusable cold compress") can really be your friends.

I took two weeks off the bike after my vasectomy. Probably should've taken three.

Two weeks sounds reasonable. I believe in a little rehab after *any* surgery. Translation - start slow and expect a little discomfort even if you wait longer. Take a short ride, then take a longer one. I wasn't cycling when I had mine, but if memory serves me correctly, I would have been pretty unhappy in the saddle after just one week...

I was back on my bike after a week. No problems

Took me over a month to get back but I had a stitch tear out about 3 days after the surgery.

When the doc says stay down he means it :) He also told me to take at least 3 weeks off from riding.

got mine done earlier this year in Feb. Doc did it with 2 1cm incisions.
