unidentified cannondale

i got this older bike that i really like and it's been painted over all white. the guy told me it was a cannondale, and for the age, i have to say that it's awesome. it's super light and is just so sweet. anyone have any ideas on the age or the model? i don't really have any real need to know, i'm just curious.

you can probably click on those pictures to go to photodump and get full sized pictures. i don't know why they don't show up better.

i do have one question though. how can i redo the handle bar wrappings? i have to take off the brake leavers and just get any handle bar wrap from the LBS?

From the looks of the rear dropouts and the clips that guide/hold the cables I'd say it's one of the early mid-80s models.
Yes, they are nice bikes.

Cool bike! I have an 80's trek with shimano 105 and I have to say it's awesome as well. Cost me $250 and I ride it almost everyday

It is an '80s Critirum frame. A pic of the head badge would help identify the year.

critirum is a style of racing?

the badge i believe was taken off to be painted. rather unfortunate.

mine cost $100! guess it was a good deal. but it's not in perfect shape. the bottom bracket bearings badly need replacing.

thanks for the time frame. that's roughly what i was expecting, but had a bit broader guess.

I remember in the 1970's , when Cannondale made panniers and seat bags. Then Cannondale started making bikes in the 1980's.
I couldn't really see how many gears this bike has, is it a six speed rear cluster? That would peg it as an early eighties model.

Actually, on that era frame, the exact date of birth is in the serial number.

The first 2 digits indicate frame size. On the R (for Racing) models the size is in cm's, on T & M models, the size in inches.

The next 6 digits are the date the frame was made.

The last 3 digits are the frame number for that day.

My '86 mtn bike is serial # 20032686105; 20" frame, made March 26 1986, frame #105 that day.

Serial number should be on the bottom of one of the chainstays.

It looks similar to my first Cannondale. It had a Suntour Cyclone drivetrain which I think was one step above Sprint like the one pictured. I believe mine was a SR400 purchased in 1986. I don't remember any non silver finish on any components back then so I would guess it's from 87 or 88.

I'm reading from my '86 catalogue;

SR400; SunTour Cyclone available in navy & white, all components in silver.

SR600; Suntour Sprint available in Sea Sprite Green only; headset, brakes & chainrings in black anodized.

The SR800 had SuperbePro, but the same cranks as the 600, only the ARMs are grey & the rings are silver.

Hey, I think I did pretty good going on memory only. I didn't have the benifit of looking at an old catalog. Who keeps those things that long anyway? I had the blue SR400 until the der. hanger broke off into the spokes. Then they gave me a new frame that came with a much nicer fork than the first one that was a bright light blue that I liked even better. I gradually upgraded to Supurbe Pro and had a very nice Cannondale.

ok i got a good inspection of the bike. i didn't really find a serial number though. i looked on the bottom of the chain stays, and all over the rear of the bike. all i could find was : CS MP(in a box) KP(in a circle). CS MP KP basically. any significance?

Look on the underside of the left chainstay. I think that is where they used to put it. I checked my old 3.0 but couldn't find it, but it's been repainted several times.

It IS on the left chainstay, on the bottom. Starts about 1 1/2" from the drop-out and goes for 2 1/2".
The digits are 3/8" tall.
So, you could mask that area ( 2 layers ) and apply Jasco paint stripper.

Just a thought in case you really want to know its birthday.
