Good cable lock?
 

My cousin just got a 29er Specialized Crosstrail Expert and she wants a nice cable lock to use with it. I don't have a theft issue since I ride beaters and I just use a padlock and cable lock.

Here is what we are looking for:
*Price range around $50
*cable lock that can be wrapped around the frame
*possibly a warranty if a theft occurs? I remember Kryptonite had one a while back.

And I have searched but mostly I find U-locks. I remember a friend of mine used to pick those with an ink pen. Not sure if this issue has been solved.

Cable locks can be cut in just a few minutes -- less time by the pros. Get a U lock.

Ditto. I think you could work your way through most cable locks with vise grips or pruning shears given a little time. Go for a U-lock, or if it has to be something longer, heavy chain.

I've seen a couple of people here write that they used cable locks when touring so they could run in a store for a few minutes or something, but not one you'd want to trust for any length of time.

And $50 will get you a good U-lock.

Ditto. Run the u-lock through the rear wheel where the rear wheel is in the rear triangle. Even if no frame tubes go through the lock, the frame is locked because the wheel can't pass through the rear triangle.

Secure the front wheel with a locking skewer. For the coup de grace, put epoxy or spackle in every bolt head you can find-- especially the headset/stem bolts.

Thanks guys. I think we are going to go tomorrow and get a decent U-lock. And on top of that we will get a cable lock to possibly deter the thieves giving them two locks to deal with.

Cable locks are useless... we have tested them at our shop and even the stoutest cable can be cut in seconds with a good tool.

A good u-lock takes a lot more effort and time... and if a thief thinks that it will take too much time to steal a bike, he / she will pick an easier target.

Better to buy a heavy duty chain, cut up some Wal*Mart tubes and slide them over the chain to protect your paint, and buy a good lock.
